Text from the organiser:
In autumn 2021, Bjørn Tomren captivated audiences across Norway as the most distinctive artist in the popular NRK series Stjernekamp. With his unique style and exceptional ability to connect with audiences, Tomren quickly became a household name and was described as “the coolest artist in the history of Stjernekamp”. Following his television success, Bjørn embarked on an extensive tour, selling out concert halls across the country, culminating in three packed performances at Oslo Concert Hall.
The artist, songwriter and comedian from Tomrefjord is also known from the notorious yodelling and accordion duo Polkabjørn & Kleine Heine, who have opened for a-ha and became the stars of the documentary film about themselves, The Art of Yodelling. In 2019, Bjørn released his first album, Bad Science Fiction, to overwhelming critical acclaim. The newspaper Bergens Tidende described the album as “so dark you could drown in it”. Tomren himself calls it dystopian sci-fi country music for listening to while recovering from a hangover.
As one of Norway’s most versatile musicians, Tomren’s musical range spans americana, religious folk tunes, jazz, ballads, yodelling, throat singing, dialect punk and psychedelic protest music.
Bjørn Tomren has also completed several expeditions and holds the world record for the greatest number of traverses of Norway from south to north; by kayak, on foot, on skis and by rowing boat.
He can also look back on a brief career as a clown. Or, as author Erlend Loe puts it:
“Bjørn Tomren is not only a divinely gifted musician with a fantastic voice. He can also ride a unicycle.”
Stjernekamp is not the first competition in which Tomren has made his mark. In 2017, he competed in the World Throat Singing Championships in Tuva and returned home with a bronze horse.
ABOUT BYSOMMER:
Few artists have captured Oslo as precisely as Lillebjørn Nilsen. Through a long artistic career, poetry and folk songs, he gave us a profound insight into the soul of the city. For many years, Lillebjørn and his collaborator Helge Westbye invited audiences to “Bysommer”, a concert held during Norway’s main summer holiday period. We are now continuing that legacy with the Bysommer concert series, where artists who, like Lillebjørn, love Oslo bring positive energy to the city’s laid-back summer atmosphere.
Bysommer takes place at venues including SALT Art & Music from June to August. Read more at bysommer.no.
Age limit: 20+ years.
