“What if… it all goes wrong?”

What happens to a society where violence becomes entertainment (The Hunger Games), women are reduced to childbearing machines (The Handmaid’s Tale), or every aspect of life is under constant surveillance (Nineteen Eighty-Four)? And could 2026, with war, AI and a rapidly warming climate, be turning into a dystopian story of its own?

Dating back to the 18th century, dystopian fiction imagines futures where society has taken a dark turn. These stories portray oppressive worlds we hope never to experience, yet which often reflect the challenges of our own time.

In this talk, Janne Stigen Drangsholt and Therese G. Eide explore the evolution of dystopian literature and the fears that shape it. How are these stories connected to the ideals of freedom, progress and reason? And what do they reveal about the threats facing our own humanity today?

Through conversations, author events and shared reading experiences, the series explores how literature can give us insight, language and resilience in times of uncertainty. The programme is open to both young people and adults.
