Osøren Jazzensemble

Osøren Jazzensemble 50 years (1976–2026) - A pioneer group in Osbygda

In 2026 Osøren Jazzensemble celebrates its 50th anniversary and invites you to an atmospheric evening filled with joyful jazz, musical pleasure and musical history.

Through half a century the ensemble has been an important part of local musical life, and stands as one of the pioneers of traditional jazz in the region. Now they take audiences on a journey back to the roots – to a time when the music arose in informal gatherings, with improvisation, energy and genuine musical joy at the centre.

The story began in the 1970s, when four music-enthusiastic men in Os Musikkforeining often met for various informal gatherings that would frequently develop into impromptu playing and jamming as the evening progressed.

With inspiration from the growing traditional jazz community in Bergen, and with the homecoming of banjo player Harald Lekven, the idea of their own ensemble was born.

In autumn 1976 the first rehearsals began, and already on New Year's Eve that same year the ensemble held its debut concert at Solstrand.

The lineup consisted of Karl Ole Midtbø (trumpet), Geir Mildestveit (clarinet), Geirmund Sandven (trombone), Walfred Nøss (percussion), Oddgeir Bjelland (electric bass), Norvald Kobbeltvedt (piano) and Harald Lekven (banjo).

One of the first highlights came in spring 1977, when the ensemble participated in a fundraising campaign to get the village its own ambulance. Several hundred people gathered in the square for a festive day marked by community spirit and music, where Osøren Jazzensemble contributed with lively joyful jazz. That same summer the ambulance was in place – to the great delight of the village community.

Welcome to the celebration!!

Here living history will be performed by an ensemble that still plays with their heart on their sleeve, and the happy group will be joined by a number of guests.
