Among the permanent exhibitions at KUBEN, you will find:
Slavegjort The story of the slave ship Fredensborg is both local history and world history for Arendal. The ship wrecked off Tromøy in 1768, and the wreck was found in 1974. Fredensborg is considered the world’s best-documented slave ship found as a wreck. The exhibition shows many of the items found during the excavation of the wreck.
Livstegn In the LIVSTEGN exhibition, you can take a journey through the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age in Agder. From the time the first people came to the area until the end of the Viking Age. In the exhibition, you can see some of the fantastic items found in Agder from this period and learn about how society changed from the Stone Age to the Viking Age. The exhibition has several fun and educational activities for children.
Barndom The exhibition is made for children and is about childhood in the 1900s. Here you can travel with the time machine to 1910, 1960, and the 1990s. The exhibition is full of activities! Among other things, you can try milking the cow, hoisting the sail, singing in the jump rope, or dressing up. Fun for both young and old!
The Crash in Arendal 1886 The crash in 1886 hit Arendal like a bolt from the blue and became a disaster for both the city and the surrounding district. In retrospect, this was not to be talked about in the once so rich city. The exhibition asks the questions: How could this happen? Was it misinvestments in sailing ships that caused the crash? Or was the cause bill brokering, fraud, and forgery?
Arne Vinje Gunnerud Sculpture The exhibition “Arne Vinje Gunnerud Sculpture” is a fantastic sculpture collection by sculptor and Arendal artist Arne Vinje Gunnerud.
The White Sails An exhibition with salty stories about people and ships in fair and foul weather. 150 years ago, Norway was the world’s third-largest maritime nation, and Sørlandet was the country’s sailing ship center. Agder’s large forests provided timber for shipbuilding, and the wind ensured the sailing ships’ progress. After the peak years, it gradually declined. The golden age was replaced by crisis times, and the sailing ships disappeared from the fleet. Steamships were the future.
