Odderøya in Kristiansand was the former naval base - now recreational area. Marked picturesque paths, old cannon positions, small beaches and a long rocky and beautiful views of the ocean and city.
Go for a walk (approx. 3 km) on the former island naval base of Odderøya, now a recreation area, in Kristiansand. Walk on idyllic sign-posted paths with excellent views of the eastern harbour, Christiansholm Fortress (1672) and the leisure boat marinas.
The island has a very interesting military history with remnants of old ramparts, the gunpowder store, an old isolation hospital and other buildings from the 18th century onwards. Odderøya was also used as a quarantine harbour in the 1830s and was the largest quarantine station in Northern Europe.
The cafeteria, a former residence of the garrison engineer on the southern tip of the island, serves light refreshmentson Sundays. It offers a fantastic view of the fjord and the two lighthouses, Oksøy and Grønningen.
There are good places for swimming on the eastern side of the island. Access from Fiskebrygga (Fish Quay). Track suitable for wheelchairs.
At Odderøya you will also find Kilden teater og konserthus (performing arts centre), a climbing park and concert venues.
