Southern Norway Agder BYGLAND

Flyvraket - return trip 7 km

  •  /  km From You
Overview
Details

On the 8th of September 1941, four B17c bombers (Flying Fortress) took off from England on a raid against German ships in Oslo. One plane probably crashed in the North Sea. One of the others returned to England heavily damaged. Another one turned around 140 km from Oslo and returned. The last one was attacked by two German Messerschmitt fighters and crashed in Songedalslia on the western side of the Byglandsfjord. Of the English and Canadian crew, none survived. All of them were buried at the churchyard in Bygland.

Turn off from highway 9 at Storestraumen and follow municipal road 304 south to Mele. Alternatively you may turn off from highway 9 in the roundabout in Byglandsfjord, follow road 305 to Senum and continue along road 304 north to Mele.

The walk starts 200 metres north of the small power station at Mele. (WGS84: 58.787821, 7.774973)

The first part of the route, approximately 2 kilometres, is on a gravel road. A path continues all the way to the wreck, about 1.5 km, mainly on heathery moorland. A few hundred metres from the wreck there is a nice viewpoint.

Length: 7 km return trip

Total ascent: 370 metres

Duration: 2–4 hours

Difficulty:
Moderate, with steep ascent the last 200 metres
