The Unionsleden (biketrail) from Moss in Norway to Karlstad in Sweden is a 350 km signposted cycle path where nature and culture are important features. In our part of the country it is quite flat area, so it is easy to get your bike around.

Two countries with an exciting and varied nature

If you want to cycle in two countries with an exciting and varied nature in an area rich in nature experiences, the Union Trail is an excellent choice. The cycle tour starts at the Oslofjord in Moss and ends in Karlstad, which is located on Sweden's largest lake, Vänern. The name of the trail comes from the fact that Sweden and Norway were a union between 1814 and 1905. The union was formed in Moss and ended in Karlstad, just like the cycle path. Since the dissolution of the Union, we have continued to be good neighbours with a lot of exchange across the borders. Even if the border is still closed, you can still take a nice tour of Norway, as there are true routes on the Norwegian side.

The Union Trail runs through an undulating natural landscape with beautiful lakes and forest terrain, and when you cycle you have plenty of time to see the landscape and the small unique gems that appear along the route.

The shared historical heritage of the union era and other important historical events is woven into the attraction. Spydeberg vicarage to name one - Here our constitution was saved. The best documented 18th-century garden can be found here. Other destinations, sights and accommodation along the trail are also highlighted.

NEWS!!!!! Transport with Dalsland Bus in the summer of 2025 - bring you back to the start

For the summer of 2025, a bus will be set up on the entire Union Trail section, with a bicycle trailer with space for 22 bicycles.

Stop by and get a buff / bandana

If you are out cycling the Unionsleden, stop by the tourist office in Ørje - Visit Indre Østfold and get a buff / bandana from the Unionsleden. We would like to hear from you if there have been any challenges, good enough signage, something you think we should do differently. Or just come in and tell us how great you had it. Either way, a buff is waiting for you if you want it.

The stages in the Unionsleden:

The main trail goes Moss - Våler - Spydeberg - Askim - Mysen - Ørje.
And a northern route that goes Spydeberg - Askim - Trøgstad, past the southern end of Aurskog-Høland - Ørje.

We would recomend everybody to take the northern route from Spydeberg to Askim - and see Solbergfoss powerstation, and it is a very nice trail down to Askim from here.
From Ørje it goes across the border to Töcksfors and on to Karlstad.

Or you can take a round tour in Norway - split in Spydeberg and Ørje.
