El río Akerselva tiene el estatus de zona cultural protegida.

El sendero que discurre a lo largo del río parte del lago Maridalsvannet - si lo recorre durante 8 kilómetros hacia abajo, en dirección hacia el centro, acabará en el parque de Vaterland (por fuera del Radisson Blu Hotel Plaza) después de haber recorrido el pasado industrial, cascadas, zonas de piscinas y de ocio, zonas de pesca, de bosques y de flora y fauna.

La cascada más espectacular se encuentra al lado de la casita roja de Hønse-Lovisa, en Beierbrua.
