Climb Europe’s highest sea cliff. Hiking on Hornelen is for those seeking a truly spectacular experience.
From the summit of Hornelen, the mountainside plunges 860 meters straight down into Frøysjøen – one of the most dramatic natural experiences along the Norwegian coast. Hiking on Hornelen is a breathtaking adventure for those who seek magnificent scenery, sweeping views, and a touch of the adventurous unknown.
Want to challenge yourself even more? Hornelen Via Ferrata gives you the opportunity to experience the mighty cliff face from a completely different angle. As a base for your trip, you can stay in Kalvåg, Svelgen, Davik, or Ålfoten – all offering accommodation and local activity providers.
According to legend, witches would rest on Hornelen on their way to and from Bloksberg. The blessed King Olav Tryggvason is said to have climbed the steep cliff face, but ordinary mortals take a longer and gentler route – either from Berleneset or Hunskår. At the top, you may even spot many petrified trolls, so if you meet a witch, you’d better offer her a cookie.
The trail is demanding and steep, but in return you’ll enjoy fantastic views all the way up. At the summit, a magnificent panorama awaits – narrow fjords, towering mountains, and small islands scattered along the outer edge of the open sea. Contact local accommodation providers for tips on guided hikes and route options.
Two routes to the summit
There are two marked routes to Hornelen – from Hunskår and from Berleneset. For the best overall experience, you might consider hiking up from Hunskår and descending to Berleneset.
From Hunskår:
Start at the end of the road at Hunskår. The trail is well marked with red T’s and cairns. The first section can be somewhat wet, but after about 200 meters of ascent, the path becomes drier. The climb is steadily steep across grass and heather terrain, with beautiful views toward Skatestraumen, Rugsund, and Måløy. After passing a small lake where you can take a break, the final 250 meters of elevation gain lead through rockier terrain. Allow plenty of time to reach the summit.
From Berleneset:
The route from Berleneset is slightly longer but easier to walk – making it suitable for a long family hike for those experienced in the mountains. Start at Lisete on Berleneset. The climb is steepest at the beginning but gradually levels out. The trail is well marked and joins the route from Hunskår near the top.
Hornelen Via Ferrata – for those who want to climb
If you’re looking for an even more adrenaline-filled experience, Hornelen Via Ferrata is the answer. Here, you secure yourself along the mighty cliff face using steel cables and iron rungs – an experience that uniquely combines climbing and mountain hiking. Several local providers offer guided tours. Contact accommodation hosts and activity providers in Kalvåg, Svelgen, Davik, or Ålfoten to plan your trip.
What should you bring?
● Good hiking shoes or mountain boots
