A walk in the woods to Melshei

This is the area of Sandnes that is best suited to outdoor activities. Here, you can go for a walk in the woods with a pram or in a wheelchair, and the floodlit trail in Melshei is ideal for training runs and the occasional – though much-appreciated – ski trip on winter evenings.

Melshei offers a network of walking trails

If you’re looking for walks in more secluded surroundings, there’s a whole network of narrower paths. The outdoor recreation areas are wooded, but the vegetation is very varied. From Melshei, there are several access points to the Rogaland Arboretum, where there is a wide and highly international variety of trees. The area also boasts several lovely vantage points such as Steinfjellet, Melsheinuten and Oslifjellet.

Rich wildlife

Sandnes Municipality has signposted trails and erected a number of information boards highlighting various hiking options. Melshei is also home to a wide variety of wildlife. If you’re lucky, you might spot elk, roe deer and hares. The area is also popular for picking berries and mushrooms.

The trails are signposted. In total, there are 12 kilometres of footpaths and 10 kilometres of roads. Several of the trails are suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. The floodlit trail is five kilometres long.

Show consideration in the outdoor recreation area

Follow the marked trails and be considerate of others using Melshei. Keep your dog under control and take particular care to respect wildlife. Only light bonfires where and when permitted, and always ensure they are thoroughly extinguished. Take care near water and bathing areas, and take all your rubbish with you.
