At Base Camp Vega you can stay in mini-cabins whose unique design is inspired by the little huts the islanders build for the thousands of eider ducks that nest in the Vega archipelago every year. We also offer good spots where you can pitch your tent. Base Camp Vega is situated right by the Vega Stairs and the Ravnfloget Via Ferrata, and the sheltered waters nearby are perfect for kayaking.
A very special way to experience the UNESCO World Heritage island Vega is through an overnight stay in one of our beautiful mini-cabins. We call them “e-houses” and their design was inspired by the little nesting huts that the proud Vega natives for generations have been building for the migrating eider ducks who nest on these islands. Today as in times past, when the eider hatchlings have left, the islanders carefully gather the valuable down used in the nests.
The e-house mini-cabins enjoy a great view of the ocean, the island Søla, the midnight sun and the islands’ rich birdlife. An entire wall can be fully opened onto the spacious terrace outside, which is equipped with a table and benches. It’s the perfect place to relax after your day’s adventures and savour the view of the evening glow. Here, you really do feel at one with the magnificent surrounding scenery.
Right nearby is a repurposed barn that now houses a pub and restaurant called Ravnen (the Raven). It offers a wholesome breakfast, tasty lunch and dinner, or you can just drop by for a cup of coffee or a pint after your day’s adventures. Ravnen serves traditional fare as well as dishes the chefs give their own special twist. Do try their bacalao, the Ravnfloget burger, the popular Fishburger or the hearty Søla stew.
Certainly a stay in an e-house mini-cabin is inspiring in itself, but you really owe it to yourself to make the most of the adventures and activities that are available on Vega.
For example, we recommend that you and your fellow travellers take a guided climb up the Ravnfloget Via Ferrata. Together with a professional guide, and wearing a safety harness, you climb 225 meters up the rock face. There are actually two climbing routes, one considerably steeper than the other, but both concluding with the Nepal Bridge, a crossing of the abyss that is bound to raise your pulse! Whatever your via ferrata choice, you will be in the safe hands of very experienced guides, and the summit rewards you with a spectacular view as well as a priceless feeling of mastery!
An easier ascent is the Vega Stairs, 2000 wooden steps that also lead to the top of Ravnfloget. Trust us, this is good exercise, and the panorama of the surrounding seas as well as the seemingly countless islands and islets of the Vega World Heritage Area is magnificent! This view from the summit is especially memorable at sunset.
