Near the town of Drøbak, the Oslofjord narrows to just 1,5 km across. This makes an excellent opportunity to achieve close encounters with seabirds that sometimes move in and out of the inner basin. From the end of April through May, ducks, divers, gulls and sometimes skuas may use the fjord as a northbound flyway. In autumn the migration is less concentrated, but may still be evident, often including auks as well. In and after periods of strong winds from a southwesterly direction, pelagic species such as Fulmar, Gannet and Kittiwake may be pushed far into the Oslofjord. In such conditions species like Manx Shearwater, Leach’s Petrel, Storm Petrel, Grey Phalarope or Little Gull may be encountered as well, with the possibilities of Sabine’s Gull and all four species each of diver and skua. Krokstrand is the vantage point where these species pass closest to the shore.
