The spectacular Navvy road
Along the Ofoten railway, between Narvik and the Swedish boarder, runs the spectacular Rallarveien. A 12-kilometer-old construction road that is suitable for both hikers and cyclists.
The trip starts at Bjørnfjell station. You can get here by car, via the marked exit from E10. Rallarveien was built at the end of the 19th century during the construction of the Ofoten railway, between Kiruna and Narvik 1883 - 1903. Rallarveien is in good condition and well suited for trips both on foot and by bicycle. In 1997, Rallarveien was named Norway's best outdoor area.
The trip from Bjørnfjell station goes in an open mountain landscape, west through Bjørnfjell cabin field and down towards Nordalsbrua and Fagerlia. The landscape is spectacular and wild. The old navvy road sneaks through the terrain in a way that one rarely sees with newer roads today. You can view great engineering art up close on several location along the trail.
The road is easy to cycle on, as it was originally dimensioned for horses and carts. But in some places the road is just a narrow ledge carved into the rock wall with steep, hundreds of meters deep slopes below, and which therefore requires that you do not wobble much with the bicycle handlebars.
Cycle down into beautiful and lush Rombaksbotn to enjoy the sun on the lawns down by the sea where it is easy to find a tent site, and feel free to swim in Rombakselva on the way.
The way from Bjørnfjell and down to Rombaksbotn is mostly just downhill and is a one-day trip.
Well down you have two choices. Boat ride out to Narvik, or to cycle up again to Bjørnfjell station.
