Surrounded by lush meadows and old fruit trees, with high mountains on either side and views across the Lysefjord, lies Bakken Farm.

Bakken Farm is beautifully situated on a hill halfway into Lysefjorden and is a great starting point for both long and short walks. It’s not hard to see why this old mountain farm has become a popular tourist cabin. Bakken really is a gem!

The ferry through the stunning Lysefjorden takes you to Bakken quay. From here, a path and stone steps lead up to the cabin, which lies about 170 metres above sea level. The walk takes around 30 minutes. It’s also possible to combine your visit with a hike to Preikestolen. To do this, set off from the car park at Preikestolen Basecamp and follow the signposted path to Bakken. This is a challenging hike of just over 11 km.

Hikes and activities

From Bakken Farm, it is about 11.5 km to Preikestolen – one of Norway’s most famous mountain plateaus. At the top of the 604-metre-high cliff, you’ll enjoy fantastic views of the majestic landscape.

If Preikestolen proves too challenging, there are plenty of lovely shorter walks you can take. The entire area surrounding the cabin is an ancient cultural landscape and offers many lovely walking experiences of varying levels of difficulty.

It’s also very beautiful further into Skurvedalen on the north side of the cabin. Pack your swimwear or fishing rod and explore Stølatjørna at the end of the valley – this lake is also known as ‘Paradise’!

Bakken forms part of the spectacular route around Lysefjorden and is a natural first or last stop on the walk, depending on which way round you go. There is a marked trail between Bakken and Songedalen mountain farm.

Food and accommodation

Outside the cabin, you’ll find a wood-fired pizza oven! Here you can make authentic Italian pizza to enjoy in the cosy courtyard. The pizza oven is popular with guests and is an attraction in its own right. But remember to book the oven in advance, and bring all the ingredients you need with you.

Bakken is an unstaffed DNT cabin with no food store, so you must bring your own food. Firewood is provided for lighting the fire. Water is collected from a natural spring. The cabin is otherwise equipped with everything you need for cooking and your stay: a gas hob, kitchen utensils, crockery, duvets and pillows. You must bring your own sleeping bag liner or bed linen.
