4-day Northern lights adventure in Svalbard - Basecamp Spitsbergen

Book

Longyearbyen is a perfect getaway for the Aurora season. A quiet small town surrounded by Arctic silence and northern lights. Package includes both accommodation and activities to give you the best chance to see the unique polar lights.

If the green, vibrant light appears, it is one of the highlights of this Svalbard adventure. There are few natural phenomena that capture your attention in the same way as the Northern Lights. And Svalbard has more to offer than just the Northern Lights. We have designed a 4-day adventure filled with popular activities combined with extraordinary accommodation. Explore Svalbard in the polar night and return home with enthusiasm to come back and explore more of the Arctic.

PROGRAM:

Day 1:
Welcome to Svalbard! Upon your arrival at Longyearbyen airport, we recommend taking the shuttle bus to Basecamp Hotel. You adventure starts here.

Basecamp Hotel is situated in the heart of Longyearbyen, with the bus conveniently stopping right outside our characteristic hotel. Here, our receptionist will warmly greet you, offering a welcome and a tour of our unique location.

Take a leisurely stroll around Longyearbyen to familiarize yourself with the surroundings. As visitors, you have access to tax-free shopping, and various stores showcase locally produced goods. In the dark season, the city comes alive with vibrant energy and a fantastic atmosphere. Explore the cafes and bars, and don't miss out on the surprisingly excellent selection of top-quality restaurants in Longyearbyen, where local ingredients are transformed into culinary delights. We highly recommend booking a guided tour of Mine 3, providing a fascinating insight into the mining industry that has played a significant role in shaping Svalbard and Norway.

During the Polar night, the Northern Lights may grace the sky throughout the day and night, depending on clear weather. Check the weather forecast for your stay to see when the green light might dance across the sky. The receptionist is available to assist with recommendations and reservations at one of Longyearbyen's restaurants.

Day 2:

Our tasty breakfast is served from 7 am.

At 9 am, your guide will pick you up at the hotel and take you to our Expedition office, where you'll receive the necessary clothing for the trip. Trapper's Station, housing our dog yard, is approximately ten kilometres outside Longyearbyen. Here, our eager and happy Alaska huskies await, ready to join today's excursion.

The guide provides a thorough introduction to harnessing the dogs and driving the sleds. Everyone gets involved in setting up the dog teams, promising a fun and energetic experience. In the early season, when there may not be enough snow for dog sleds, we'll go dog sledding on wheels.

We head into the Arctic wilderness to explore the Polar night together with your own dog team. The trip concludes with a hot drink around the bonfire in Trapper's Station, where the guide shares stories from the time when trappers sought fortune on Svalbard.

After spending time with dogs and nature, it's comforting to return "home" to Basecamp Hotel. Perhaps unwind with a book or game before dinner, and we're happy to assist with reservations.

Day 3:

A delicious breakfast is served from 7 AM.

Longyearbyen is surrounded by many beautiful sites. Depending on season and weather conditions, you can climb spectacular mountain tops or explore the hidden world inside an ice cave.

Pickup is at 10 AM, and the route will be determined by snow and weather conditions. Participants will receive headlamps and snowshoes/crampons depending on the conditions. If it’s possible to go to one of the ice caves, we will start with a climb up the moraine before we can explore the winding melt water channels inside the glacier. If we choose to hike to a mountain top, we will choose one of the mountains in the vicinity of Longyearbyen. After a steep climb, you will enjoy the magnificent view of the town and the surrounding mountains and fjord.

Get ready to explore the outdoors, with the duration being about five hours before returning to the hotel around 3 PM.

This evening, you should try another restaurant in Longyearbyen. Our receptionist can help you with reservations and transport if needed.”

Day 4:

Breakfast is served from 7 AM, and checkout is at 11 AM.

This morning, we suggest a visit to the Svalbard Museum to delve into the history of Svalbard before your flight departure. Take some time for a final stroll through the centre of Longyearbyen or enjoy a comforting mug of hot chocolate in one of the local cafes. The airport shuttle bus stops outside your hotel approximately two hours before your flight departure.

Northern lights:

The northern lights in Svalbard can appear on a clear sky from October to March. The biggest challenges you will meet are the weather and the solar activity during your stay. Both factors are unpredictable and more time at the destination will increase your chances to see the northern lights. We can never guarantee that you will see the lights, but you are for sure looking forward to a unique adventure.

Language:

Safety is our top priority during our trips. It is necessary for you to be able to communicate in English or a Scandinavian language if you want to join our excursions. The tour language (English or a Scandinavian language) will be chosen based on the group's language skills.
