Hardangervidda National Park

Hardangervidda National Park is the largest national park in Norway. This vast mountain plateau offers excellent hiking opportunities for both seasoned hikers and recreational hikers.

The national park area is well prepared for walks in summer and  cross country skiing during winter with marked trails for day trips or overnight trips. You can go from cabin to cabin, spend the night in a tent, have a base at a campsite or at one of the hotels in the mountains or by the fjord.

Along Route 7 at the Hardangervidda lie Liseth Pensjonat og Hytter, Garen Camping, the mountain lodges Dyranut Fjellstova, Dyranut Turisthytta and Halne Fjellstugu. By lake Tinnhølen you'll find Trondsbu Turisthytte and a few hours hike from the road lie the tourist huts Rauhelleren and Sandhaug inside the Hardangervidda national park. Hjømaberget at the top of Hjølmadalen in Øvre Eidfjord is a good starting point for hikes into Veigdalen valley where you will find the mountain lodges Vivelid Fjellstova, Hedlo Turisthytte and Hadlaskard. All these places are good starting points for mountain hikes, fishing and other activities on the Hardangervidda.

You can ususally make the last ski trip in June, and from the beginning of July is the start of the hiking season. Detailed maps can be purchased at the places of accommodation, in local bookstores, at the tourist information or the Norwegian Trekking Association  www.turistforeningen.no If you want to learn more about the Hardangervidda, you can also visit the Norwegian Nature Center Hardanger which is located in Øvre Eidfjord.
