Lyngdal

Kvåsfossen waterfall Lyngdal

Kvåsfossen is one of Southern Norway's largest waterfalls.

With its narrow passages, rapids, and cascades, the beautiful river Lygna flows from Lygnevannet in Hægebostad through Lyngdalen to its outlet in Kvavikfjorden in Lyngdal.

The permanently protected watercourse has always been a magnet for both young and old. The river truly comes to life during the salmon season, only partially living up to its name, which means calm in Old Norse. The largest salmon in Southern Norway in recent times was caught on a fly in Lygna in August 2008, weighing 17.6 kg. The dream of catching a big salmon, combined with inland fishing and small game hunting, provides enough excitement for those who love hunting and outdoor activities. A major attraction in Lygna is Kvåsfossen, where the rapid and waterfall have a drop of 36 meters.

Kvåsfossen and the legend of the troll Kvåsfossen has always been a landmark. The enormous "Kvåssteinen" forming the foundation for the current bridge is a spectacle in itself. At first glance, it looks like it could topple over at any moment, but it has rested securely for thousands of years.

Legend has it that a troll placed the stone in the middle of the river in Kvåsfossen to block the salmon. After trying several kilometers downstream, at Vegge, the troll managed to get the stone in place in Kvåsfossen. One must assume that this troll was very fond of salmon. So, since a salmon ladder has now been built in a tunnel around the waterfall, allowing salmon to continue up the river, we might also expect to hear from the troll in due time.

The Salmon Ladder In 2014, the salmon ladder past Kvåsfossen was completed. The ladder runs in a tunnel inside the mountain, forming an arch around the waterfall. The salmon ladder is 220 meters long, has 46 pools, and a rise of approximately 20 meters. The gradient varies from about 35-50 cm per pool.

It is quite spectacular to be able to see the salmon through a glass wall in the tunnel. With a mix of awe and fear, you can also stand and look into the gorge and truly feel the power of the waterfall on your body. Visit the website of the National Wild Salmon Centre - Kvåsfossen for more information.

Nature Experience and Visitor Center The National Wild Salmon Centre - Kvåsfossen is an attractive tourist attraction in the region. Norway's national bird, the Dipper, nests at the waterfall and is often seen there. There are several well-marked hiking trails in the area. Top trips to Morsfjell or Ørnefjell are rewarded with spectacular views. Waterfalls, the gorge, the river, and the hiking area, along with information about the salmon ladder and salmon fishing, are beautifully presented at the National Wild Salmon Centre - Kvåsfossen.
