Here you walk on the same rock as on the moon; Anorthosite. Astronauts and scientists from NASA have even visited the area to prepare for taking rock samples on the moon!

Magma UNESCO Geopark area is a member of European Geopark under the auspices of UNESCO thanks to the area's important geology: unique rock formations that comprise a "moon landscape". Geologists have visited this area for over 100 years, producing over 350 major and minor scientific geological studies and a rich historical literature about the special rocks. Several of the Magma UNESCO Geopark localities show geological phenomena that cannot be seen anywhere else in Europe. Your holiday on the moon!
How does a mountain mine from the beginning of 1900 century look like? What is GEOfood? By looking at the geology we can learn about the region's population, the agriculture, food culture, industry, cultural development and biodiversity. In Magma UNESCO Geopark, mining has been one of the main resources for the region for more than 250 years, and it is still possible to visit old exciting mining caves in the mountains. The food culture in the area has its own special features and during your visit you can taste for example honey made by endemic bees, existing in this area alone. Magma UNESCO Geopark and its exciting stories are waiting to be discovered!
What can you do in Magma UNESCO Geopark? The Magma UNESCO Geopark offers hiking and cycling tours in the lunar landscape; several climbing possibilities in dramatic Jøssingfjord, numerous paddling adventures in the salmon rivers or in one of the 6,000 lakes standing in between the anorthositic moon rocks! You can choose between easy, intermediate or demanding tours. When participating in adventures booked from us, you will be following a Geopark guide included in the tour price. Get ready for your outdoor-learning and an unforgettable experience! If you feel more comfortable visiting Magma UNESCO Geopark in a bus we are pleased to offer several tours for groups of up to 45 participants.
