Nigardsbreen Glacier

Jostedal

Nigardsbreen is an arm of the mighty Jostedalsbreen, beautifully located in Jostedalen in Luster Municipality.

Nigardsbreen Glacier is located in beautiful fjord village of Jostedal in Luster

This is one of the most accessible glaciers, where you can peer into the blue ice at very close range, and everyone above the age of five can join guides on glacier walks.

When you drive up the scenic valley of Jostedalen, you will end up at the Breheimsenteret - the national park centre, with an architecture inspired by the glacier formations. From this centre it is a short drive up to the car park, and from there you can either walk along the lake up to the glacier itself or take the boat across the lake.

Even at this low altitude of close to 300 metres (1000 feet) above sea level, you get the feeling that you are in an alpine, even polar environment between the lake and the glacier tongue, and further down at the river delta you can observe some of the processes forming the landscape.

The melt water from the glaciers is an enormous national energy resource in the generation of hydro-electric power.

Unique Landscape

This unique landscape has also inspired artists to paint some of the major works of art in the Norwegian national-romantic era.

If you want to take part in guided hikes and walks on the glacier itself, please contact the Breheimsenteret (the visitor centre) or the authorized guides and instructors of the Jostedalen Breførarlag Ltd.

Safe travel

Nice hikes are possible to several of the glaciers in Jostedalen. Nigardsbreen and Bergsetbreen are the two most visited glaciers, but Tuftebreen and Fåbergstølsbreen are also worth a visit. It is possible to hike safely for those who are familiar with the area or who receive tips from locals.

Glaciers are constantly moving, and large blocks of ice can break off without warning. Ice falls can be dangerous and may also block meltwater, causing sudden flooding or changes to the course of streams and rivers. Rocks can loosen from the steep mountainsides, especially during rain or stormy weather. Avoid staying in areas where there is a risk of ice falls, sudden surges of water, or rockfall.

Avoid staying in areas that are exposed to falling ice, flash floods, or falling rocks. If you intend to make your way onto a glacier or all the way over to it, we recommend that you follow a guide who can assess the conditions. Slopes of naked rock are slippery when wet, so make sure to choose appropriate footwear!
