Rekekafeen is located in the southern boathouse on the sunny side of Halden harbour, in an authentic maritime atmosphere. It shares its premises with Fredrikshald Coastal Association. The southern boathouse was built in 1830 after the city fire in Halden in 1826. It serves as a reminder that Halden was once a major maritime and trading city, and around 1800 there were 30 boathouses in the city. In 1910, the Fredrikshald Steamship Company took over the boathouses, which became known locally as “Lekterbrygga.” The company was dissolved in 1963. In October 1977, a decision was made to demolish the boathouses, leading to a preservation battle. The issue attracted national attention and was even brought before the government. The final decision was made in December 1978, after which restoration work began.
