The ultimate family trip where even the very young can come along on a scooter or in a trailer pulled by mum or dad.
The ultimate family trip where even the very young can come along on a scooter or in a trailer pulled by mum or dad.
In slightly hilly terrain and mainly on dirt road, this trail leads past lakes and across marshes with walkways – the ideal outing for the whole family.
Take your time, study nature's secrets, and let the curiosity of the young set the pace. Starting point is Rondablikk, and the route follows Peer Gynt seterveg to Årvillingen. Årvillingen offers excellent swimming opportunities with changing rooms and toilet facilities. Seating and BBQ areas are also available. On a sunny day, the grassy fields and rocky shores are packed with water-loving children and adults.
As you leave Årvillingen, ride along Gamle Hovdevegen and then turn left at Furusjøråket. You now have lake Skjemtjønna on your left and lake Furusjøen on your right. The Skjemtjønna area is partial marshland and can be muddy in places, but continue for 200–300 metres along Krokbekkvegen and you will find a good place to stop. There is a path on your left with stepping stones that allow visitors to study the moss and lichen growing across the marshes. What is more fun than jumping from stone to stone down a flowing stream?
As you reach the end of Krokbekkvegen, continue along the trail. This is also partial marshland and can be muddy in places. A bit further in there is a walkway across the marsh.
You are now riding along the edge of lake Furusjøen with its small, idyllic boathouses and traditional mountain cabins. The final section of the trail, before you reach Vassmillomvegen, can also be muddy. It can be difficult for the very young to keep their balance whilst crossing this short stretch, and a helping hand with the bike from mum or dad is recommended. At this point, many opt for a detour to the wilderness camp and woodland shelter at Rauddyrodden by lake Furusjøen. The woodland shelter has seating and a campfire site.
The next leg is perhaps the most challenging section – the uphill stretch to Haugsetra. This is a climb of approx. 2 km.
From Vassmillomvegen, follow the road up Vålåsjøvegen to Haugsetra. You then have Kvamsfjellet with the Rondane massif in front of you.
