Lovund

The island of Lovund

Lovund is an island with pristine scenery, far out at sea. This island in the Lurøy municipality covers only 5 km2 and has fewer than 500 year-round inhabitants. Visitors will find a friendly and modern community optimistically seizing opportunity.

The main livelihood is salmon farming. The largest employer is Nova Sea, an aquaculture company that has seen 40 years of continuous growth and today produces top-quality salmon every year worth billions of kroner. Lovund is a vibrant community where locals and visitors can share a deep appreciation of the salty fragrance of the sea and waking up to one of the world’s most magnificent ocean views.

Lovund hosts one of Norway’s largest puffin colonies, which counts between 200,000 and 300,000 birds. On your calendar, be sure to mark 14 April, because it is a very special day. That’s when the puffin arrive from afar in large numbers – and it’s an unforgettable sight!

A visit to the puffin colony is a must, as is a visit to the Coastal Culture Centre. This beautiful museum, situated by the ferry quay, has fine exhibitions on the puffins, the islanders’ proud heritage, and the ancient traditions of Lovund’s fishermen.

Lovundfjellet, rising 623 metres above the sea, is the island’s highest peak. You need to be in pretty good shape for the demanding summit hike, but your reward is an amazing panorama of the Helgeland coast.

Spectacular accommodation
Lovund Hotell has hotel rooms overlooking the high seas as well as a restaurant that proudly serves dishes prepared from the local catch. Lovund Hotel also offers accommodation in rorbu cabins that are beautifully situated right on the water.

How to get here
Take the ferry from Stokkvågen (Fv17) or the express boat from Sandnessjøen.
