Vassbakken Kro & Camping

Midway between Skjolden and Fortun in a valley surrounded by steep mountains lies Vassbakken – right on the Sognefjellsvegen national tourist route.

Vassbakken Kro & Camping offers cabins and tent pitches sheltered by magnificent birch trees. The camp site has 13 cabins of varying standards and sizes, space for around 50 tents or caravans, an amenities block and a small shop selling selected groceries. Also in the grounds is Skjolden Vandrerhjem with 23 newly refurbished rooms. There is also a cosy fully licensed restaurant serving traditional Norwegian dishes.

To the north is Jotunheimen national park with the Hurrungane massif and Turtagrø, a popular area for climbing, skiing, summit trips and rambling. The village of Skjolden sits at the end of the Lustrafjord, a branch of the world's longest fjord: the Sognefjord.

Breheimen national park is also nearby with its lush valleys and farmland, stunning glaciers and rugged mountains. Jostedalen national park and the Nigardsbreen glacier are an hour's drive away. The River Fortunselva is a good spot for sea trout and salmon fishing. The area is also home to a number of interesting cultural heritage sites, including Urnes stave church – Norway's oldest stave church and on the Unesco list of the world's best preserved cultural heritage sites.

In the centre of Skjolden is a shop, post office and the multi-use venue Fjordstova with its indoor swimming pool and climbing wall.
