SUNNDALSØRA

Vinnu waterfall

See Vinnufossen, Europe's highest waterfall, plunging 865 meters down its steep mountainside. At its greatest, the waterfall spreads out like a bridal veil.

Vinnu originates from the Vinnufonna glacier, the largest glacier between Jostedalsbreen and Svartisen. The waterfall is located about 6 km from Sunndalsøra at the Holsskeiet rest area along RV70.

Vinnu is a popular photography subject and is at its largest in spring and early summer (May-July). Get a closer view by following the marked trail from Holsskeiet.

Vinnu stone stairs

The Vinnu Staircase is under construction, and currently, 676 steps lead up towards Vinnufossen. The hike takes 30-40 minutes to the top from the parking area.

Note: The staircase is officially closed from 1st Nov 2023 to 15th May 2024.The kingdom of Waterfalls

Sunndal, with its majestic mountains, has several world-class waterfalls. Less known and more hidden than Vinnu is Skorga, which has a waterfall drop of 864 meters. It is Europe's second highest and is located about 2 km from Vinnu.

In addition to Vinnu and Skorga, the Åmotan waterfall is in the same area. Åmotan means river meeting, where six rivers with their waterfalls converge. Sunndal is rightly called the Realm of Waterfalls!
