Yrisetra

Overview

Area: Oldedalen Type: Foot Grading: Medium Length: 1,2 km Season: All year round

You can park your car on the lawn, close to the starting point. Yrisetra consists of two seters: Yrisetra innanfor (on the left side of the river) and Yrisetra utanfor (on the right side of the river). To get to Yrisetra utanfor: Follow the road to the upper farm here at Yri. The path is then marked all the way from the farmhouse to the mountain farm. From Yrisetra utanfor you can continue to Yriskåla and Yribesseggen. The marking of these paths are of different quality.

Yrisetra innanfor is also easy to find: Follow the same road about 100 meters, and turn left over the bridge. Follow the road to Simatunet, the upper farm on the left side of the river. The path is then marked all the way from the farm to the mountain farm. Yrisetra innanfor was the very fist place in Oldedalen to get a telephone. This was in 1920, and the milkmaid used it for communicating back to the farm.

A seter is normally a cluster of small log cabins and sheds situated above the tree line. They were built hundreds of years ago. The farms were small, and they were mainly used to grow winter fodder. Therefore it was necessary to have a summer farm where it was possible to utilize the rich mountain pasture during the summer months. The milkmaids spent the whole summers there tending the animals, and making butter and cheese. The products were either transported down to the farm on an aerial cable, or on the milkmaid`s back. Farming in the old way is now history.
