Conducir a través del valle de Østerdalen, una ruta conocida como el atajo verde, nunca resulta aburrido. Hay muchas cosas que ver, hacer y degustar a lo largo del camino más corto entre la capital, Oslo, y la tercera ciudad noruega, Trondheim.

La carretera y el río Glomma fluyen mansamente, como de la mano, mientras los brillantes rayos de sol resplandecen a través de una pared interminable de inmensos pinos. Pero este viaje es de todo menos monótono.

Mira hacia la derecha a unos 110 kilómetros al norte de la ciudad de Elverum y verás la escultura gigante de la que todo el mundo habla en la región: un alce de metal de diez metros de altura obra de la artista Linda Bakke. El colosal animal se alza sobre sus cuatro patas en la nueva área de servicio de Bjørloa, más o menos a medio camino entre Oslo y Trondheim.

A lo largo del atajo verde hay otras 60 obras de arte en forma de cuernos de alce y de colores vivos, cuya finalidad no es otra que la entretener a los conductores para que no se queden dormidos al volante.

“Lo mejor de esta zona es que tienes un montón de cosas interesantes que ver y hacer, y siempre estás cerca de la naturaleza virgen”, cuenta Vigdis Leren. Junto con Marijke van der Wiel regenta Kjøkkenveien 3, un nuevo restaurante situado en una vieja casa de madera que es sólo un ejemplo de establecimiento de la zona que apuesta por productos frescos y locales en su menú.

“Aparca el coche y adéntrate en el bosque, lleno de vestigios de la antigua cultura de la caza. La región a lo largo del atajo verde tiene también fuertes y arraigadas tradiciones respecto a platos de comida local de todo tipo”, asegura Vigdis.

“Nuestro plato característico para el almuerzo es Sabor a bosque y montaña, e incluye varios tipos de carne curada, queso de la zona y ensalada con crema agria de arándanos”, explica Marijke, que obtiene los ingredientes necesarios de la cercana naturaleza y de su propio jardín.

El atajo verde hace referencia al hecho de que el camino a través del valle de Østerdalen es 45 minutos más corto que la carretera principal E6 que atraviesa el valle de Gudbrandsdalen. Es habitual oír a los vecinos referirse a los bosques de la zona como “el oro verde”. No en vano, estos bosques forman parte de un plan nacional que pretende promover sectores que respeten el medio ambiente, así como el turismo ecológico.

El oro verde

“Sabor a bosque y montaña es nuestro plato característico”

Parte del tiempo ganado se puede pasar haciendo actividades que sólo encontrarás aquí. La estación de esquí de Savalen está sólo a unos minutos de la carretera. El Museo forestal noruego es uno de los más populares del país, con más de 100.000 visitantes al año, y el Glomdalsmuseet es uno de los museos de folklore al aire libre más antiguos de Noruega y dispone de más de 90 edificios históricos.

Las jornadas anuales de caza y pesca nórdica, a finales del verano, atraen a la región a más de 30.000 aficionados. También es posible visitar una destilería, un museo de medios de transporte, y un campo de golf completo. ¿Y qué hay de la fauna? Pues bien, los animales salvajes incluyen aquí especies como el urogallo, el oso, el lobo, el glotón, el lince. Y, por supuesto, el alce. Nos encontramos, de hecho, en la tercera zona con mayor concentración de alces de Noruega.

La mayoría de hoteles, campings y demás tipos de alojamiento lucen el estilo y el encanto locales, con adornos alegres que reflejan la naturaleza y la fauna que podemos admirar a la vuelta de la esquina.
