Trollstigen hike - Kløvstien Path (858 m.a.s.l.)

Experience Trollstigen on foot! The hike follows a separate path in Isterdalen and then up Trollstigfoten, is moderately challenging, and takes about 3 hours.

Note! There has been a landslide on the trail. In 2024, we recommend other hikes in Åndalsnes until the trail has been secured.

The trail starts in Isterdalen and ascends Trollstigen along Kløvstien, an old thoroughfare between Romsdal and Sunnmøre.

Before the road opened in 1936, this was the main route between Romsdal and Sunnmøre, used for transporting horses and cows to the market at Devold (near Åndalsnes). The path initially traverses Isterdalen and then climbs up the mountainside alongside Stigfossen. For centuries, the Romsdalsmartnan trade fair at Devold was vital for trade and interaction in this region. The access over the mountains between Romsdal and Sunnmøre, provided by Kløvstien, was crucial for farmers trading goods, horses, and cows at the market.

Hiking description and parking

Park near the information sign in Isterdalen, on RV63, and follow the road for about 100 meters before taking a left onto a tractor road. Continue to where it meets the Istra river. The trail continues into the forest and up to a bridge. Cross the bridge, turn left, and soon after, the trail diagonally heads right into the forest. The trail is clear and well-marked. Knutssetra is located just as the ascent begins.

From Knutssetra, the trail becomes a tractor road again, leading up to a crossroads with a bridge to the left. Continue straight along the footpath, which runs along the base of the mountain, to where the ascent of Trollstigen and Stigfossen begins. The last 150 meters before the Stigfoss bridge is a very steep section, secured with a chain. Be cautious, especially on slippery sections. The trail has recently been improved with a stone staircase built by Sherpas from Nepal, marking the start of a more extensive renovation.

After the Stigfoss bridge, follow the road around two bends before the trail veers left again. The trail is well-developed and easy to follow for the last stretch. You'll need to cross the road twice after the bridge.

Remember: Good sneakers or preferably hiking boots are recommended for this hike.
