Text from the organiser: — When two eras meet. Composer Camille Pépin (b. 1990) is being highlighted as one of France’s — if not Europe’s — most exciting and relevant composers right now. In the piece Chamber Music, a sextet written for mezzo-soprano, strings, horn, clarinet and piano, we are taken on a symphonic journey into the poetic world of the Irish writer James Joyce. A musical world as pulsatingly beautiful as it is fascinating. Next, we’ll hear Austro-Hungarian composer Ernst von Dohnányi’s Sextet in C major, a highly popular piece which, like Pépin’s, borders on the American and almost Hollywood-like — yet remains firmly rooted in the classical European tradition. On stage are mezzo-soprano Melis Jaatinen, a large ensemble from the Oslo Philharmonic, pianist César Cañón, and our own artistic director, pianist Thormod Rønning Kvam. Melis Jaatinen mezzo-soprano Guro Asheim violin Cecilia Wilder viola Louisa Tuck cello César Cañón piano Thormod Rønning Kvam piano James Patterson horn Pierre Xhonneux clarinet For the full programme and performer presentation, see our programme page. Duration approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes. The concert will be performed without an interval. Welcome to a powerful artistic and musical experience! Photo: Mania Gwarek

Text from the organiser: A heart of chromium beats for freedom, community and the courage to be yourself. And this is definitely KEiiNO at their most courageous and human as they set out on the Chromium Heart Tour – with a world premiere on home ground! The album Chromium Heart offers an irresistible blend of nostalgic pop harmonies, dark synths and samples, electric live energy, joik and Sámi rap. A mix of pop, disco and Nordic grandeur, as contrasting and delicious as raspberries dipped in dark chocolate – or as someone put it: “Sounds like ABBA after a study trip to Berlin’s Berghain.” Since KEiiNO won the public vote at Eurovision 2019 with Spirit in the Sky, Alexandra, Fred and Tom Hugo have built a large international following with over 170 million streams, six platinum awards, several music prizes, and a place on IMPALA’s “100 Artists to Watch”. The trio is known for their magical concerts – a celebration of community, pride and genuine energy – and KEiiNO’s live performances receive glowing reviews for their ability to connect across audiences: somewhere between “cheesy” and “cool”, between glitter and the northern wind. The Barber of Seville
    Oslo
    29.01.2026 - 21.02.2026

    The Barber of Seville

A vitamin injection of an opera! Rossini’s masterpiece is bursting with exuberant music, twisted disguises and liberating comedy. Bribes, betrayal and complications The young girl Rosina lives in the home of the old doctor Bartolo, who plans to marry her. But Count Almaviva has fallen head over heels in love with the girl and tries to win over her heart. The town’s self-proclaimed handyman, Figaro the barber, decides to help the count seduce Rosina. This sets the stage for bribery, betrayal and comic entanglements. How will Figaro unravel all the knots, save the day – and love? Comedy and tragedy hand in hand The characters all have their unpleasant sides: selfishness, desire and greed. Director Jetske Mijnssen takes this seriously and shows how comedy is never far from tragedy. The Barber of Seville is one of three plays by Pierre Beaumarchais and is a prequel to the Marriage of Figaro. In that play, Count Almaviva has won his Rosina, but it is not a happy marriage. In light of this, Rossini’s comic opera about the young love between Rosina and Count Almaviva takes on a different tone.

Amalie Stalheim with young string players

Sounds of the new generation. Cellist Amalie Stalheim is known for her intense musicality, bold artistry and compelling stage presence. As part of the mentoring programme Classical Link, she is as passionate about the great legacy of classical music as she is about commissioning new works and supporting young talent. At Bergen’s Det Vestnorske Teateret, Stalheim leads an ensemble of talented young string players – violinists Phelan Walker and Olga Melby Larsson, Philemon Hahn on the viola, and Clara Yuna Friedensburg on the cello – in an exploration of the sound worlds of three talented young composers mentored by Ørjan Matre. Miłosz Krawczyk is a Swedish-Polish composer and winner of First Prize at the at Dante 700 International Competition for Symphonic Composition. His music draws from sacred traditions, folk influences, and Eastern European modernism. Yuto Obata is a Japanese composer based in Helsinki whose music aims to expand the sonic possibilities of acoustic instruments in the creation of a unique sonority. Julia Constance Wiger-Nordås is a Bergen-based composer and flautist whose handwritten scores for acoustic instruments set out to explore varied dimensional concepts and ‘touch the transcendent’. Join some of Norway’s most promising young string players in this Festival Academy concert, which is an occasion to get to know the artists of the future. Clara Yuna Friedensburg will also give a concert with pianist Ole Christian Haagenrud at Gamlehaugen, and Olga Melby Larsson is also featured both in a concert at Gamlehaugen and as a soloist with BIT20 Ensemble in Korskirken. Andakt i tonar: konsert med BIT20 Ensemble

This evening is dedicated to Anton Webern, the Austrian composer known as the master of silence. His finely chiselled, precise compositions are charged with weight, despite the sparing use of notes. Like in a museum, where every object is deliberately placed and carefully curated, Webern’s selected tones are measured and thoughtfully considered, with all excess stripped away. “Clarity! Clarity! Über alles Klarheit!” – Anton Webern In a time when we are inundated with sound and impressions, the church space has gained a renewed appeal, and BIT20 Ensemble wishes to invite the audience to an introspective experience at Nykirken. Treat yourself to a pause and step into a space for reflection and great art. Fanboy Artistic director and conductor for the evening, Bjarni Frímann, is perhaps Webern’s greatest fanboy. In his childhood bedroom, a framed picture of the composer stood on his bedside table. Lean back this Tuesday evening as Bjarni tells the story of why Webern is so special. On the church floor stands a full ensemble – ready to turn you into a fanboy or fangirl too. Doors open at 18:30

    - Remember to book a table for the best experience One of Norway’s most beautiful voices is out with a new album. Now Britt-Synnøve Johansen comes to Visebasaren. Kveldslys — taste the word: evening light. The day fades, darkness falls, but there is still light — warm, soft, and gentle. Britt-Synnøve Johansen is the petite woman with the powerful voice and a rare gift for emotional expression. She has sung Édith Piaf in Norwegian, tango in Norwegian, and performed her own and others’ songs filled with deep emotion. On her new release Kveldslys, the mood is calmer; the lyrics are mature, wistful, and reflective. Yet it remains warm — and endlessly beautiful. Like an evening bathed in soft light. Kveldslys was recorded live with highly skilled and dedicated musicians. The result is a tender, intimate, and honest album. Musically, it belongs in the Norwegian folk song tradition but also reaches toward French chanson, jazz, and Americana — all at once. Britt-Synnøve is known for captivating her audience, and with Kveldslys she is once again ready to share songs and stories that everyone can relate to. Joining her this evening is her absolute favorite pianist, Rasmus Solem.

"ROAD CHOICE" by BLE // Antikvariatet

"VEIVALG" by BLE This is a performance you didn't know you needed to see! - audience «VEIVALG» is a genre-crossing folk music/theater performance by the company BLE. On stage is musician Bendik Smedåsgjelten Qvam, and plays everything from bokkehorn and lur, to electric guitar and violin with x number of pedals. Next to him is actor and musician Lisa Luni Thun. Together they tell a story about gentrification of Norwegian nature, cabin developments, old mountain huts, and a deaf grandfather's search for his own "forest tranquility". This is a warm and humorous performance, which also asks important questions about the choices we make, both on our own behalf, others' and not least - the environment around us. What consequences have they had, what are we left with, where does the road go next, and... where do you go... when these questions pile up, and everything around you suddenly feels a bit "too much"? Is there still peace to be found on that mountaintop far away? The performance is written and produced by BLE ; a cross-over company that, in terms of genre, is located where traditional folk music meets the electronic landscape, and the old-fashioned verse form meets newly written text that sometimes borders on slam poetry. A new-fashioned tavern concept, if you will, where the overall motto is; "if the mood is good, everything is good". ....and it usually is, no matter where they are. A warm welcome! Many have heard the legendary Huun Huur Tu from Tuva perform in concert, but what sets the previous generations of Tuvan throat singers from the Alash Ensemble apart is that this trio combines modern elements with traditional music. In the belief that traditional music must be constantly evolving, these talented musicians subtly add Western elements to their songs, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new, yet still true to their Tuvan musical heritage. This music is so great and unique that most people who have heard throat singing for the first time, can date the time before and after the concert! “There are plenty of recordings of Tuvan throat singing out there, but they can’t compare to witnessing such sonic magic in real time.” – Washington Post Ayan-ool Sam – vocals, dospuluur, igil, guitar, Bady-Dorzhu Ondar – vocals, igil, guitar, Ayan Shirizhik – vocals, kengirge, shyngyrash, shoor, murgu, xomus

"Expectations". For what then? Love? Hope? Joy? This is an album Andreas Unsvaag has been working on for almost 4 years. This is a journey from sorrow to joy and back to sorrow again. On January 27, Andreas Unsvaag will play music from this album for the first time in Trondheim. The journey started on New Year's Eve at Storhaug in Stavanger with the song "Danse Aleine", and the last song was written in the summer of 2024 when Unsvaag needed to say "Kom Hjem". In between there has been the "Fear" of racism, the hope for the "Thought of Perfect", or the question of "Will it happen this time?". The bad thing about it is that feelings are just a "Deception", a game of a longing to be "With You". Maybe it's all just a made-up "Fantasy" that you think about, while you're on your way home with "12 Kjelsås". But "if only I could fly"..

    Anniemal @ Antiquarian

Anniemal a.k.a Ann-Sissel Tvenning is a singer/songwriter from Bodø, with her heart in Oslo and who is now starting to get the city of mustaches under her skin. In the spring of 2024 she released her first single “I am enough” and in November of the same year she played to a packed Antikvariatet. Here the audience got to experience an artist who managed to fill the room with raw power and vulnerability. She delivered self-composed songs where her style is to tell stories. Her voice has a nerve that hits and together with the songs you sit and think. She also performed good classics with her own twist. This will be an evening with a varied repertoire, good music and beautiful presentation. Feedback from the last concert: “Authentic, real, heartbreaking.” “A warm and nice concert, with lyrics and melodies that tell a story and that touch the heart. This is a break in everyday life that you didn't know you needed.” “Anniemal delivers a concert mixed with a dreamlike atmosphere and fierce intensity. Her stage performance captivates you and takes you into the heart of the art.” On stage tonight she will be joined by Martin Pofahl on bass, Fredrik Pettersson on keyboards and Jonas Einvold on guitar. You shouldn't ignore other surprises on stage either.

From Hickox’s Treasure Chest Conductor: Adam Hickox Piano: Paul Lewis Program Unsuk Chin: Subito con forza Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 Witold Lutosławski: Concerto for Orchestra About the concert This evening, Adam Hickox has chosen works that really complement each other well in a colorful concert full of energy and fantastic music! In Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, the contours of the mature Beethoven are visible and it is almost as if the first movement is looking back towards Mozart, while the second movement looks forward, embraces the ideals of Romanticism and never looks back. The evening’s soloist, Paul Lewis, is considered one of our very best Beethoven interpreters, and critics in all corners of the world are raving about his concerts, so here’s to enjoying! In 1950, Lutosławski was commissioned to compose an orchestral work to celebrate the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra finally getting back on its feet after the Second World War. His source material had always been Polish folk music, and now he took full advantage of it. Concerto for Orchestra is permeated with folk melodies, and these are stretched and stretched and thematized and embroidered in innovative ways in a work in which the orchestra and its instrumental groups really get to play the main role as soloists. The concert opens with Unsuk Chin's subito con forza from 2020, which was written for the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. The piece is full of musical references to his music and a fireworks display of a celebration!

Powerful and timeless choral work Conductor: Adam Hickox Soprano: Siobhan Stagg Barytone: Yngve Skullerud Søberg Choir: Trondheim Vocal Ensemble & Trondheim Symphonic Opera Chorus Choirmaster: Urša Lah Program Johannes Brahms: Ein deutches Requiem About the concert Brahms’ requiem opens with the unearthly beauty of “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” And this is a requiem that contains both sorrow, consolation and hope. The work gives a deep sense of peace and reflection. The most important thing for Brahms was that both the text and the music should be of comfort and encouragement, and he himself selected the texts that he took from the German Bible. He put the choir at the center and said himself that this was a requiem for man. So let Brahms comfort you and take you from sorrow to joy, from darkness to light, in a masterful work of art written as help and support for people of all religions and from all corners of the world.

Bring your own record / Listening party av PME-ART

The audience is invited to a small gathering where everyone can bring their own records or play music from their phone, and tell a story in a relaxed setting. A record player and a stack of vinyl records. For each record there is at least one story to tell. The stories come from their own and others' lives, gossip, magazines, friends and strangers. One by one the records are put on, and the stories grow out of the previous one and into the next. This performance is played over two evenings; on the first evening the impressive collection of records is played in random order, and the company tells the stories about them. On the second evening the audience is invited to bring their own records, and tell their stories about them. This is evening two, which takes place in Rosendal Café. Each performance the records are played in a new order. Each evening opens up to new stories, and the result is an astonishingly precise and heartwarming performance, a journey through art, politics and love, seen through songs they both love and hate. The performance is part of PME-ART’s long-term exploration of hospitality, a work that examines how to create an open space for listening and community. Bring Your Own Record/Listening Party Audiences are invited to a small gathering where everyone can bring their own records or play music from their phone, and tell a story in a relaxed setting, in the same way that the performers from PME-ART do the night before, during The DJ Who Gave Too Much Information. Here, people can come together to listen, to think about what the songs do to us, and what we do with them. Listening to music with friends and strangers is an activity that is characterized by politics, questions, personal experience and stories of all kinds. This project, which has now been performed for fifteen years, comes from PME-ART’s research on the theme of hospitality, about how to welcome the audience into a space to come together with the artists. It is an attempt to create an inviting, relaxed place where many different types of music open up countless directions in which humor and thought can move. This is PME-ART's most popular performance, and every year more records and stories are added, which go into a strange archive of the work. Are Sleveland and Ingvar Hovland (concert) + Ståle Ådland (exhibition)

ARE SLEVELAND AND INGVAR HOVLAND both have roots in Egersund. Lyricist Ingvar Hovland and musician Are Sleveland invite to an atmospheric evening at Tinfabrikken in Stavanger. Together they present a blend of short stories, humour, and music. The two have shared the stage many times. The contrast between Ingvar’s storytelling and Are’s musical expression creates a unique and charming experience – a performance offering both reflection and laughter. Ingvar Hovland Ingvar is a lyricist and singer-songwriter with a long career and a distinctive ability to capture the extraordinary in the everyday. He has written for artists such as Vamp, Sigvart Dagsland, Rita Eriksen, and Elle Melle, and is a central figure in Egersund’s cultural life. Are Sleveland Are has long been an active artist and songwriter, often performing on various stages in Stavanger. Many of his songs are based on Ingvar’s lyrics. In spring 2025, Are participated in The Voice on TV2. STÅLE ÅDLAND is a freelance illustrator with extensive experience, both in agencies and as a storyboard artist for video productions. He grew up in Ryfylke and now lives in Stavanger. He has provided illustrations for publishers, magazines, the construction and oil industries, art commissions, the Stavanger Trekking Association, and the Stavanger Chamber of Commerce. For over four years, he worked as a designer at the Stavanger Museum/Norwegian Children’s Museum, focusing on conceptual and graphic design. As he puts it: "It’s great fun to have an idea, make the drawings, and then help build the whole exhibition – a bit more hands-on than just sitting at a Mac." In his free time, he spends much of it in Ryfylke, working on his old wooden boat. And the first week of October is sacred – lobster fishing begins! At Tinfabrikken, Ståle will bring a selection from his long career, and there’s great excitement about what’s to come!

Once upon a time there was a guy called Bando. Bando grew up in Oslo, the world’s smallest big city. He tried to find his place and identity in a chaotic world where villains live without consequences and superheroes need saving. A world where everything—even love—is for sale, and a one-night stand is just a swipe away. Step into a universe where our friend searches for good things in the wrong places, and for authenticity in fake people. Where the highs are high and the lows are deep. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to “The Man Who Died Standing.” After several years at the top of the charts, winning the most prestigious awards the country has to offer, and having his own three-month exhibition at MUNCH, Arif is ready to take “The Man Who Died Standing” to some of Norway’s most venerable venues. Britt-Synøve Johansen "Kveldslys" - releasekonsert på Spor 5

“Kveldslys”. Taste the word: evening is falling. Darkness gathers. Yet there is still light. A snug, gentle light. Britt-Synnøve Johansen is the small woman with the big voice and a rare gift for communication. She has sung Edith Piaf in Norwegian, tango in Norwegian, and her own and others’ music, all filled with great emotion. On her new release, Kveldslys, the mood is calmer; the lyrics are mature, wistful and reflective. Yet it is still warm and endlessly beautiful. Like an evening bathed in soft light. Kveldslys was recorded live with highly skilled and dedicated musicians. It is a tender, intimate and honest album. In terms of genre, this is Norwegian folk songs, but the album also reaches towards French chanson, jazz and Americana. All at once. Britt-Synnøve is known for enchanting her audiences. With Kveldslys, she is once again ready to share songs and stories everyone can recognise oneself in. After ten years of waiting, the legendary Casiokids are back in full force! The Bergen-based band has already completed a comeback autumn that reeks of excitement. Their fabled concerts, featuring elements like 4-metre-tall dancing velvet monsters and their irresistibly danceable synth-pop with witty West Norwegian lyrics, set the stage perfectly for pure, euphoric fun during the festival summer of 2025! Between 2004 and 2014, the band embarked on a wild journey across the globe. They performed thousands of club and festival gigs in nearly 40 different countries, and tracks like Fot i hose, Finn bikkjen and En vill hest were frequently played on BBC, Radio France, and US college radio. They were signed to Universal, Moshi Moshi, and Polyvinyl, nominated for Spellemann awards multiple times, and received a 1 million NOK grant from A-ha. They earned heaps of praise from international heavyweights such as Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and NME, the latter calling the band “the best thing to come out of Norway since black metal.” Then, suddenly, they took a ten-year siesta, during which the band members explored other musical projects. Vocalist Fredrik Vogsborg, for example, has won three Spellemann awards and worked with Aurora, Young Dreams, The Megaphonic Thrift, Silja Sol, Strange Hellos, Real Ones, and Hjerteslag. In 2024, the band finally returned with the critically acclaimed comeback album Tid for hjem, released on Jansen Records. Clearly, the band has fully awoken from its slumber, as they have already announced plans to release even more new music in 2025. Casiokids are ready to unleash both old hits and new favourites on stage, at home and abroad, and this unique concert experience is one not to be missed!

In September, he released the single Oppe på månen (Up on the Moon), which marks the start of a new musical chapter – and an upcoming album in 2026. The tour kicks off in Alta in February and takes him to 29 cities and a total of 32 concerts across the country. With standing room only and 35,000 tickets on sale, Holsten invites his fans into the darkness and onto the dance floor – to create the intimate yet energetic atmosphere he values so highly. ‘After a whole year without concerts, I'm more excited than ever to go on a huge tour. With a new album, a new show and an even bigger band, I promise this will be something very special,’ says Holsten. He says that while working on the new album, he has had the concert stage more in mind than before. The result is a playful, energetic and audience-friendly expression. After playing on the country's biggest stages, he now wants to get even closer to his fans: "I want to meet people where they live – not just in the biggest cities. What I've missed the most is the audience. That's why it will be fantastic to travel around the country and meet in a more intimate setting.

    Hannah Storm

When Hannah Storm was picked up by MADE Management (AURORA, Sigrid, SKAAR, among others) in 2021, she quickly became part of Bergen’s thriving music scene. Collaborations with established artists like Sondre Lerche and producers such as Vetle Junker (AURORA, iris, Metteson), Matias Tellez (Girl in Red, Young Dreams), and Odd Martin Skålnes (Sigrid, AURORA) soon saw the light of day. During By:Larm in autumn 2021, the young artist took a step forward and became one of the festival’s most talked-about and praised performers. 26-year-old Hannah Storm grew up in a musical household in Oslo and started writing her own songs at the age of seven. After singing in choirs for 13 years and completing studies at the music program at Foss High School, the jazz program at Toneheim Folk High School, and LIMPI (Lillehammer Institute of Music Production and Industries), Hannah sent demos to various industry contacts. When MADE Management in Bergen, her first choice, showed interest, regular trips to the city for sessions with local musicians followed. These collaborations bore fruit, and in March 2021, Hannah relocated to Bergen. Thanks to these sessions, she had already built a solid network in the city’s music scene, which allowed her career to take off quickly. She signed a record deal with Petroleum Records and impressed audiences and industry professionals at events including Vill Vill Vest, Øyafestivalen, Bergenfest, and Pstereo in Trondheim. The down-to-earth Oslo native cites influences ranging from The Beatles, Queen, and Frank Sinatra to Susanne Sundfør, Amy Winehouse, and Adele. Her music, whether heard in the debut single Stranger or the latest release The Room, carries a timeless and immediate quality. Hannah Storm is unafraid to create large-scale, melodic compositions with both organic and heartfelt expression, a rarity for an artist early in her career. Fans of her live performances, including the legendary By:Larm show, will attest to the goosebump-inducing power of her voice and stage presence. Dagsavisen described her performance at By:Larm: “She has a magnificent voice that suits what can be called luxury pop, a genre rarely mentioned but deserving of Spellemann recognition once Hannah Storm breaks through.” Since that landmark By:Larm performance, Hannah Storm has appeared on NRK’s Lindmo, collaborated with the electronic duo Lemaitre, supported AURORA at venues including Sentrum Scene and in front of 16,000 fans in Mexico City, and performed her own concerts in London, Bogotá, and Mexico’s largest festival, Corona Capital.

With Robert Eidevik’s unique songwriting and lyrical universe at the forefront, the band delivers melodic, noisy, and street-poetic rock in Norwegian. Following the comeback with Tyvens Dagbok (2022) and Betonglandskap (2024), Hjerteslag is now set to release its sixth album Vi kommer for å stjele dine barn og andre taterballader on 9 January 2026. The first single is “Aldri Dra Herifra Vadmyra.” The debut album Møhlenpris Motell was a critical success, while Vannmann86 brought commercial breakthrough, including the radio hit “Sang Til Sonja,” named Best Song of 2016 by Dagbladet. Hjerteslag further cemented its position with Nattseileren (2018), earning Robert Eidevik the Edvard Prize for lyrics, before the comeback with Tyvens Dagbok (2022) and a new lineup received glowing reviews. With Betonglandskap (2024), the band returned to Bergen both thematically and musically. Jim Ghedi (UK) at Folken

Grottene Doors 19:30 Concert starts 20:00 Age limit 18 or with guardian Event on Facebook The acclaimed and critically praised British folk musician Jim Ghedi brings a full band to Grottene! "Tim-Buckley-meets-Richard-Thompson-at-the-end-of-the-universe vibe. Colossal." – MOJO "Ghedi's combination of intensity and sublimity recalls Lankum to some extent, yet where that band's doom descends like a thick black cloud, there is something more earthy in Ghedi's work – the horrific, terrifying beauty of a collapsing planet, turned into sound." – The Quietus "Yorkshire folksmith's ruminative, storm-tossed masterwork." – 9/10 Uncut Jim Ghedi hails from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and although he clearly knows folk music history well, he stands out as a potential torchbearer for a new generation of performers who both respect tradition and dare to experiment. His album Wasteland, released in March 2025, received widespread acclaim and was described as a bold statement, among the most complete, far-reaching, and ambitious works in the folk genre, challenging the boundaries of what folk music can be. A highlight in Jim's band is Owen Spafford, a highly respected fiddle player and composer from Yorkshire, emphasising their progressive approach to pushing boundaries and creating cross-genre expressions. On his latest album, Jim Ghedi has created something grand: intense, meditative, bold, at times apocalyptic, and remarkably expansive. Wasteland is an album unafraid to explore the darkness of the modern world, embracing its strange, sharp, and unsettling moments. It captures the grandeur of life from the micro to the macro, moving closely through the personal while reflecting broader social issues. "Wasteland is about the idea of a place once familiar, now decayed and unrecognisable," says Ghedi. "It explores the process of watching someone’s environment collapse." Within this, much occurs: "It also deals with death, personal loss, grief, mental health, and how nature offers comfort and meaning in the face of loss, with these worlds interweaving." Yet the album is not solely about decay. It is also a bold statement, some of Ghedi’s richest and most ambitious work to date. The opening track Old Stones sets the tone, unfolding with finely tuned instrumentation and Ghedi's gentle vocals, before exploding as his voice cries out amid a swirling storm like a man lost at sea. It perfectly encapsulates an album that, however dark and dramatic, is also imbued with beauty, tenderness, and strong emotional power. "The record is raw and vulnerable, with a lot of emotion," says Ghedi. Ghedi has always been an artist encompassing folk in its purest form, yet he often pushes the genre’s boundaries, never more clearly than here. As in his previous albums – A Hymn for Ancient Land (2018) and In the Furrows of Common Place (2021) – Ghedi uses traditional folk songs as a foundation to explore contemporary themes through modern, experimental music. The melancholic What Will Become of England draws on a recording of English singer Harry Cox found in the Alan Lomax archive; Newtondale and Blue John are hornpipe melodies written by Sheffield fiddler Dave Shepherd from the LP English Fiddle Players; elsewhere are versions of songs from Hull and Liverpool, while Trafford Road Ballad is by Ewan MacColl, about a worker from Salford refusing to go to war. "With the traditional material on this album, I sought songs with content that resonated with me," says Ghedi. "But also rooted in Northern England." This is a central theme: feelings of loss, decay, and decline are often most visible in working-class communities, which he wanted to incorporate. "There’s a strong working-class narrative and representation in both the traditional and original songs," he explains. Some of the most striking pieces are Ghedi’s own compositions. Wasteland is magnificent: rooted in a crumbling environment – "there’s violence on these hills," he sings mournfully – yet also beautiful and soaring, with strings weaving through his resonant electric guitar. His choice of fuller soundscapes, like electric guitar and big drums, marks a clear shift. "The lyrics needed a more band-driven, loud delivery," he explains. "Using electric guitar opened the soundscape and pushed me vocally, forcing greater use of falsetto and allowing larger arrangements." The album was recorded over two years at Tesla Studios in Sheffield, with David Glover as engineer and producer, and a wide range of contributing musicians: David Grubb (fiddle), Daniel Bridgwood-Hill (fiddle), Neal Heppleston (bass), Joe Danks (drums), Dean Honer from I Monster (synth), Cormac MacDiarmada from Lankum (vocals), Ruth Clinton from Landless (vocals), and Amelia Baker from Cinder Well (vocals). "Everyone involved shaped the album into what it is," says Ghedi. What Ghedi has created is a remarkable space where deeply personal emotions coexist with reflections on environment, place, and society, while historical lines are traced through traditional material. Wasteland is as much a world to enter as it is an album, with Ghedi carving out a distinct musical language to explore this landscape. When he began working on the album, Ghedi felt somewhat lost, detached, and unsettled. "I was very frustrated with England after moving back to Sheffield from Ireland," he says. Yet despite stemming from a difficult period, the album contains glimpses of hope and beauty amid decay. "It was a dark period while writing, but also joyful and uplifting," he reflects. "There was positive energy, and it felt cleansing, with much enthusiasm put into the work. I believe this album comes closest to the sound I’ve long aimed for, and represents me fully." Amid the turbulence, Ghedi has found a musical place he can now call home. jimghedi.com | Bandcamp | Instagram

    Maijazz in Stavanger

Maijazz has become one of the foremost recurring cultural events in the Stavanger region. Like most artistic projects, Maijazz also had a challenging start, and its success was by no means guaranteed. The festival is the result of strong collaboration between talented artists, enthusiastic volunteers, supportive politicians, loyal sponsors and, not least, an ever-growing and knowledgeable audience. Each of these has played a crucial role in developing the festival into one of the country's leading events in its category. Maijazz is committed to playing a role in the exciting development and challenges facing the Stavanger region. Maijazz provides great experiences and brings life to the city Maijazz aims to contribute to the enjoyment of music, insight and reflection. But of course also to good entertainment, great experiences and life in the city. Maijazz has contributed to the region with artists such as Jan Garbarek, Pat Metheny Group, Herbie Hancock, E.S.T., Joe Zawinul and Youssou N'dour, to name but a few of those who have visited Stavanger and Maijazz. Maijazz is constantly evolving Maijazz wants to be a driving force in the cultural development of the region. In recent years, the established collaboration with the University of Stavanger has really taken off. The Bjergsted Jazz Ensemble is a cornerstone of the festival. The series ‘Tett på en Helt’ (Close to a Hero, part of the Blå Trå series at Stavanger Jazzforum) has become one of the most popular events among students at the Institute of Music and Dance/UiS. The collaboration with Stavanger Cathedral School/Music, Dance and Drama, Vågen Upper Secondary School in Sandnes, St. Svithun Upper Secondary School and the Culture School in Bjergsted focuses on the development of musicians, the music scene in the region and, not least, audience development.

Melissa Horn at Stavanger Concert Hall

Melissa Horn – Solo with Guitar This is what the upcoming autumn and winter tour across the Nordic countries looks like. After a sold-out spring tour in 2024, it’s time again. This time, it will be stripped-down and intimate. Melissa Horn is one of Sweden’s biggest and most highly regarded artists. With her vivid lyrics about unrequited love, she has touched a large audience with her music for over 17 years. Her debut album Långa nätter (2008) and her following five albums have all achieved gold and platinum status in Sweden and reached high positions on the charts in both Norway and Sweden. The strong connection between Melissa and her audience has driven her to undertake more extensive tours than most Swedish artists. In autumn and winter 2025/2026, she is scheduled for over 50 shows across the Nordic countries. Duration: TBA Organizer: Stavanger Concert Hall

Minor Majority turné: Reasons to Hang Around 20 år!

In January, Reasons to Hang Around turns 20, and Minor Majority celebrates with an anniversary tour performing the album in its entirety. The concert is in two parts: first, the band plays the album being celebrated, followed by selected songs from the rest of their career. Reasons to Hang Around received glowing reviews upon its release in January 2006. The album debuted at number two on the VG-lista charts, went gold, and produced four major radio hits in Norway: “Let the Night Begin,” “Come Back to Me,” “Supergirl,” and “Alison.” The opening track, “Wish You’d Hold That Smile,” also became an unexpected hit on French radio, helping the band gain a large audience in France. The album repeatedly appeared on year-end best-of lists in the music press in late 2006. In winter 2007, it won the Spellemann Award for “Best Pop Group.” Vocalist and songwriter Pål Angelskår says: “Reasons to Hang Around may be our best collection of songs and without a doubt our most far-reaching album. The catalogue contains a popular album that can draw both old and new listeners into our universe and allows continued touring both domestically and in Europe.”

Next year marks 25 years since Morten Abel’s iconic album I'll Come Back and Love You Forever struck the Norwegian music scene like a meteor. Time to celebrate! 2001 was a great year for pop music. The new millennium was young and promising. The album format was at its peak, even though Napster disrupted the record industry. One could invest in a CD with an exciting cover, learning to love it after countless listens, or enjoy it with huge headphones in the local record shop. Nothing could stop Morten Abel’s extraordinary success at the time. His third solo album perfectly captured the spirit of the era, with an eclectic mix of unforgettable melodies, big choruses, innovative production, and a silky smooth voice with playful diction. It was all infused with a unique character that made him one of the country’s most remarkable pop stars. The album received excellent reviews, stayed on VG-lista for 20 weeks, and Abel was awarded the Spellemann Prize as Pop Soloist of the Year and, notably, Song of the Year for the title track – which still sounds just as refreshing, unique, and beautiful today. The album topped the Norwegian charts for seven weeks and includes songs such as “You Are Beautiful,” “Welcome Home,” “Music Is Communicating,” and “Stay Crazy” – songs that have accompanied a generation of Norwegians through life and love. 25 years later, Morten Abel invites us on a one-night time machine journey. The evening takes us back to 2001 with a full revisit of I'll Come Back and Love You Forever. It will be a night filled with musical nostalgia, but also a testament to how timeless these songs are – and what a unique songwriter and artist Morten Abel is. As if that weren’t enough, the night will also feature a greatest hits parade from his entire solo career – from his debut album to the newest releases – all the highlights you have sung along to, danced to, and carried with you through life. Over a career spanning several decades, from Mods via The September When to his solo work, Abel has demonstrated a rare ability to combine the experimental with the popular. Morten Abel has always balanced the experimental with the accessible, delivering a uniqueness few can match. Now, all of this comes together in one evening celebrating both a masterpiece and one of the most distinctive voices in Norwegian pop history. The 2026 concert will therefore not only celebrate an iconic album but also an eccentric artist who has left a lasting mark on Norwegian popular music history.

    Per Haarr at Martinique

Per Haarr – Live in Concert Per Haarr is an active songwriter and guitarist, known from bands such as Vrakfeber, Heavy Heads, In Every Way Eagles, and Jarle Obrestad’s Rock Vest. As a solo artist, he explores a more subtle and introspective sound—his warm voice at the centre, with touches of Americana and a hint of Nick Drake. Yet, when joined by his band, the music may well drift into a psychedelic landscape with boogie grooves and roaring guitars. Band Line-up: Christer Espevik – bass and vocals Arne Andersen – drums and percussion Lasse Fuglestad – guitars Join for an atmospheric concert that moves between the gentle and the powerful, where soft melodies meet fierce musical expression.
