Son las cuatro de la mañana en el norte de Noruega.

Nos hemos metido en carretera antes de que el pueblo se ponga en marcha.

“A veces vemos dos alces y otras nos encontramos hasta 50. Es cuestión de suerte y de cuánta gente se encuentre transitando por la zona”.

A lo largo de la mañana, mientras nos desplazamos por la isla de Andøya, en Vesterålen, en el norte de Noruega, vamos viendo más y más alces.

Safaris de alces en Noruega

¿Has estado alguna vez en “el país de los alces”? El alce es uno de los habitantes más famosos de Noruega y se encuentra en la mayoría de las zonas del país.

Ver a estos grandes animales de cerca es una experiencia inolvidable. En un safari de alces, un guía de la zona te ayuda a moverte por el bosque para que puedas ver a los alces en su hábitat natural.

Importante: Como ocurre con todos los animales salvajes, debemos respetar a los alces y mantener siempre una distancia prudencial. Recuerda que los alces son más rápidos que nosotros y pueden llegar a hacernos daño si se sienten atemorizados, amenazados o si sienten que deben defender a sus crías.

La magia de los alces en “La isla de los cuentos de hadas”

Nuestra población de alces está creciendo, y a lo largo de los años han ido encontrando sus zonas favoritas. Una de ellas es Vesterålen al norte de Noruega, donde lleva muchos años habiendo alces.

Jens y Marius Birkeland trabajan para Vesterålen Tours, y todos los días organizan safaris de alces tanto en Andøya, en Vesterålen, como por el distrito de la isla. Tras muchos encuentros mágicos con el rey de los bosques, han decidido ponerle un apodo a la isla de Andøya.

“Le hemos puesto a Andøya La isla de los cuentos de hadas”, comentan los hermanos.

Y lo cierto es que parece un mundo de cuento cuando nos dirigimos a ella en busca de alces, con sus laderas empinadas y sus bosques frondosos a un lado y el mar abierto en el otro.

“No creo que haya muchos lugares en el mundo donde puedas montarte en un coche y encontrarlos de inmediato”.

Muchos de los safaris de alce de Noruega se realizan en coche, y los paisajes de campo abierto de Andøya no son solo ideales para hacer un viaje por carretera, sino también para ver a los alces.

¡¿Pero qué hace un alce en mi jardín?!

Lo gracioso de los alces es que pueden aparecer en cualquier parte. A veces esto da pie a situaciones peligrosas, pero también a momentos muy divertidos.

“Pueden aparecer en los jardines de la gente o en mitad del bosque. Por la noche pueden presentarse en plena ciudad o meterse al mar a nadar”, explica Jens.

No obstante, también les da por cruzar carreteras. El mayor peligro es que se te cruce uno mientras vas conduciendo y que no tengas tiempo de reaccionar. Por eso es muy importante conducir con cuidado en zonas en las que haya muchos alces.

¿Te apasionan los animales y te fascinan las auroras boreales? ¿Qué te parecería hacer un safari nocturno de alces a la luz de las auroras boreales?

Noruega es uno de los mejores lugares del mundo para ver las auroras boreales, y resulta que Vesterålen está justo en una de las zonas donde estas presentan mayor actividad.

“Se trata de una experiencia increíble. Hay nieve, hay alces, hay grandes montañas… y además puedes disfrutar de las auroras”, explica Marius.

Ver un alce ya en sí es un gran acontecimiento, pero hacerlo a la luz de las auroras boreales o el sol de medianoche es una experiencia mágica.

Los alces de Noruega

El alce es una de las especies más grandes de la familia de los cérvidos. Se trata del mamífero terrestre más grande de Noruega, y se diferencia de otras especies de cérvidos por su tamaño y fisionomía. Los machos más grandes pueden llegar a pesar hasta 800 kilos.

Son unos animales hechos para resistir el frío del invierno. Incluso en los días en los que la temperatura desciende hasta los -30 grados Celsius, apenas reaccionan con unos ligeros escalofríos.

Cuando hace más calor, en cambio, basta con que la temperatura suba por encima de cero para que empiecen a jadear.

El alce es además un gran nadador, tal y como pudieron comprobar los habitantes de la remota isla de Træna en 2005. A una distancia de 40 kilómetros de la Noruega continental, un alce salió del agua a tierra firme un día del mes de julio. Fue un acontecimiento tan inusual en la isla que le hicieron una estatua y le pusieron de nombre Tare.

¿Cuál es la mejor época para hacer un safari de alces?

Todas tienen su aquel.

Según Jens y Marius, la mejor época para hacer un safari de alces es durante los meses de agosto, septiembre y octubre, que es cuando las hembras están en celo. Es cuando podrás toparte con los mayores ejemplares y sus grandes cornamentas, y también disfrutar de la amplia gama de colores que nos brinda el otoño.

“Luego está el verano, que es quizá la época que más nos gusta a nosotros, porque es cuando nacen las crías”, explica Marius.

Siempre hay que mantener una distancia prudencial con los alces, pero sobre todo en esta época. Jamás te pongas entre la madre y su cría, pues la madre puede ponerse muy protectora y agresiva.

Realiza un safari de alces

Vesterålen no es el único lugar donde podrás conocer a los alces noruegos. Tanto si quieres ir en coche, bici eléctrica o a pie, hay agencias que ofrecen safaris de alces en todas partes de Noruega.

Ten en cuenta que los alces son animales salvajes y que por tanto son bastante tímidos, por lo que es imposible saber si habrá suerte durante el safari; cada día es diferente.

Consejos para hacer fotos de la fauna salvaje

• Abrígate: ponte varias capas cuando salgas al exterior. Esto aplica para todo el año, pero sobre todo es importante en invierno.

• Conoce al animal: la fotografía de fauna trata de capturar momentos fugaces. Merece la pena aprender a predecir el comportamiento del sujeto con anterioridad.

• Ten en cuenta la dirección del viento: los alces suelen colocarse de cara al viento.

• Ten la cámara lista y utiliza una lente con zoom para sacar las mejores fotos. No te acerques al animal. Es grande y potencialmente peligroso.

• Sé paciente: No te des por vencido, las mejores fotos llevan su tiempo.

La fauna de Vesterålen

La zona de Vesterålen es el hogar de muchas especies increíbles. Puedes hacer una excursión guiada en busca de águilas, renos, zorros, nutrias y búhos, entre otros.

En Noruega, esta zona es también el reino de las ballenas. En Noruega, los cachalotes, que pueden llegar a medir hasta 20 metros, se suelen ver por la costa de Vesterålen durante todo el año, lo que hace de este el lugar con más probabilidades de avistar una ballena.

En verano, la isla de Bleiksøya, situada a las afueras de Andøya, se convierte en un santuario de pájaros, pues alberga la mayor colonia de frailecillos del país.
