Como afirma Lonely Planet, Noruega es el último refugio de algunos de los animales salvajes más fascinantes de Europa. Antes de la llegada de Internet, ciertos turistas incluso esperaban toparse con osos polares en las calles de las ciudades del país, aunque solo es posible verlos en Svalbard.

En la naturaleza

En el territorio noruego continental, no obstante, sí podemos encontrarnos con alces, renos y aves únicas si nos adentramos en el medio silvestre por nuestra cuenta. Si tienes esa suerte, no olvides que se trata de animales salvajes. No los molestes y aléjate de forma sosegada. No los asustes ni te acerques a ellos; algunos animales podrían perseguirte si te perciben como una amenaza.

Para observar a estos animales en su hábitat natural, la mejor opción es apuntarse a un safari. Los guías saben en qué lugares hay más posibilidades de encontrarlos y, lo que es más importante, cómo hacerlo sin ponerse en peligro.

Esto último es muy importante, ya que algunos safaris te acercan a animales que no deberías buscar por tu cuenta, como el buey almizclero.

Los guías te pondrán las cosas más fáciles para que disfrutes del encuentro con los animales y solo tengas que preocuparte de documentar tus aventuras (es decir, de hacer fotos espectaculares para tus redes sociales).

Ya hemos tratado los aspectos básicos; repasemos ahora los mejores safaris de Noruega.

Avistamiento cercano de ballenas

Las ballenas. Estos gigantes del océano visitan las costas noruegas cada año, para deleite de los turistas y la población local. En Noruega es posible verlas en la costa de Vesterålen durante todo el año. Se organizan excursiones guiadas desde Stø y Andenes. En esta última localidad, en 2023 está prevista la inauguración de un espectacular museo: The Whale.

La ballena con más presencia en la estación estival es el cachalote, pero quizá tengas la suerte de avistar también ballenas piloto, rorcuales enanos, ballenas jorobadas, delfines y orcas. En invierno, de vez en cuando se pasa por aquí el rorcual común.

En el Norte de Noruega hay otros safaris guiados en invierno, por ejemplo con los operadores turísticos de Tromsø, desde donde se puede llegar en bote hasta las aguas favoritas de las ballenas.

En las islas Svalbard podrías tener la inmensa fortuna de avistar por un momento la mayor ballena del planeta: la ballena azul. En verano, Isfjorden es conocido por ser la zona donde ballenas azules, rorcuales comunes, ballenas jorobadas y belugas van en busca de alimento.

El safari de ballenas ofrece también paisajes maravillosos, montones de aire puro marino y un entorno natural que, sin duda, te dejará huella.

El buey almizclero, una explosión peluda llegada del pasado

Las montañas de Dovrefjell son el único lugar de Noruega, y uno de los pocos de la Tierra, donde se puede admirar al buey almizclero. Si participas en un safari a pie guiado durante el verano, está prácticamente garantizado que te toparás con estas bestias desaliñadas de media tonelada. Algunos operadores turísticos también organizan visitas guiadas y fotográficas durante el invierno.

El buey almizclero no es agresivo, siempre que no te acerques demasiado. Por tu propia seguridad y por el bienestar de los animales, mantente como mínimo a 200 metros de distancia.

El buey almizclero parece grande y torpe, dado su peso de entre 225 y 400 kilos, pero se mueve con rapidez y llega a alcanzar una velocidad de 60 kilómetros por hora.

El derecho a vagar libremente

El conocido como derecho de acceso (allemannsretten) forma parte de la Ley de Recreación al Aire Libre desde 1957. Garantiza que todo el mundo pueda disfrutar de la naturaleza, incluso en grandes terrenos privados. 

Los requisitos son sencillos: sé considerado y respetuoso. Asegúrate de que recoges tu basura y muestra respeto hacia la naturaleza y hacia los demás.

Una excursión monstruosamente deliciosa

Mira a los ojos del cangrejo real rojo en el mar de Barents, frente a la costa de Kirkenes, en Finnmark, cerca de la frontera con Rusia. Después podrás degustar una suculenta comida.

En los safaris para observar al cangrejo real podrás ver al gran monstruo en tierra o desde un bote, cuando lo saquen a la superficie para meterlo en el caldero. El cangrejo real rojo llega a medir hasta dos metros de pinza a pinza y tiene un peso de hasta 15 kilogramos.

Después del safari llega un absoluto banquete: sabrosos bocados de carne de cangrejo sobre pan blanco, guarnición casera y vino blanco para quienes gusten.

El sueño de todo observador de aves

El Observatorio de Aves de Lista, en el Sur de Noruega; Runde, en la Noruega de los Fiordos; Varangerfjord, en el Norte de Noruega… Hay un sinfín de lugares estupendos para observar las aves en la bella naturaleza noruega.

Fotografía a las aves buceadoras, los somormujos y las aves acuáticas silvestres de la zona occidental, o dirígete a los hábitats montañosos en busca del chorlito carambolo, el falaropo picofino, la alondra cornuda y el escribano nival. Si estás de suerte, incluso podrías dar con un búho nival.

Las islas Vega, frente a la costa de Helgeland, declaradas Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, son otro punto destacado para los observadores de aves, gracias a sus más de 230 especies. Una de las más populares es el pato de flojel.

Si te interesan más especies árticas como el eider de Steller, el eider real o el arao de Brünnich, te recomendamos la zona en torno a Varangerfjord, en Finnmark. Es uno de los mejores destinos, y más accesibles, para la observación de aves árticas.

También es posible encontrar al pigargo europeo a lo largo de la costa de Noruega, si bien la mayor población de estas aves se concentra en la zona más septentrional del país. Las águilas de Noruega incluso se han llevado a Escocia para repoblarla con estas majestuosas aves.

¡Y no nos olvidemos del frailecillo atlántico! Esta pequeña y peculiar ave puede observarse desde diversos lugares. Los más populares son Runde, en la región de Sunnmøre; Andøya, en Vesterålen; la isla de Lovund, frente a la costa de Helgeland; y Røst, en las islas Lofoten.

Déjate conquistar por los alces

Si ansías encontrarte frente a frente con el rey del bosque, participa en un safari de alces guiado. También puedes avistar un alce al atardecer desde una bicicleta eléctrica, pasar la noche en una torre de observación de alces en el valle de Espedalen, o besar a un alce en Svartisen Moose, en Salten.

Sin duda, en Noruega hay muchos lugares para admirar los alces, tanto en su hábitat natural como en parques naturales. ¡Hasta hay un sitio llamado Elgland, que significa “el país de los alces”!

Otros divertidos safaris que merecen la pena

Los encuentros con animales descritos anteriormente son algunos de nuestros safaris de más éxito, aunque otras experiencias menos conocidas te resultarán igual de sorprendentes.

En Namdalen, siguiendo el curso del río Hurdalselva, en el Este de Noruega, puedes navegar en busca de castores; y varios destinos costeros ofrecen safaris de focas, por ejemplo en la región de Sunnmøre y en el Noroeste.

Si te encuentras en la zona más remota de Noruega, las islas Svalbard, quizá tengas la suerte de ver morsas. Las islas, a mitad de camino entre la Noruega continental y el Polo Norte, son un destino famoso por sus exóticas actividades en la naturaleza.
