Un viaje al confín del mundo
Con su paisaje llano y rocoso, y lo que parece una vista interminable del océano, casi da la sensación de estar conduciendo al fin del mundo en esta ruta panorámica. Y eso es solo una pequeña parte de lo que hace que la ruta panorámica de Varanger sea tan emocionante.
Este trayecto de 160 kilómetros de longitud discurre entre Varangerbotn y Hamningberg, en la península de Varanger, el extremo más septentrional de Noruega. Es el camino perfecto para todos los que quieran conocer la vida en el Ártico.
Lo ideal es volar a Kirkenes y conducir hasta Varangerbotn o navegar a bordo del crucero Hurtigruten hasta Kirkenes, Vardø o Vadsø, desde donde deberás continuar el trayecto en coche.

Guía local de la ruta
Ottar Zahl Jonassen, director general de Visit Varanger, creció en Varanger y ahora vive en Vadsø, en el sur de la península de Varanger.
«Una de las singularidades de esta zona es su paisaje llano y sus horizontes infinitos, que no es lo que uno suele imaginar cuando piensa en Noruega y en sus picos altos. También es una región muy espaciosa. Si buscas estar a solas con la naturaleza, aquí puedes hacerlo», comenta Ottar.
A Ottar le apasiona enseñar todo lo que Varanger ofrece, así que nos llevará a algunos de los lugares más impresionantes de la ruta panorámica nacional de Varanger.
El viaje comienza en la parte más interior del fiordo de Varanger, en Varangerbotn. Tras solo cinco minutos en coche, esta zona de descanso, llamada Gornitak (que significa «ascensión») se divisa junto al fiordo.
Aquí encontrarás las instalaciones de servicio en un antiguo edificio de piedra restaurado, donde antiguamente se almacenaban las municiones durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Siguiendo la carretera hacia el este, pronto llegarás a Nesseby, donde se alza esta increíble iglesia frente al mar.
La historia de este monumento es muy interesante. Gran parte de los condados del norte quedaron en ruinas durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, incluida esta zona, pero, milagrosamente, la iglesia de Nesseby permaneció intacta.
“Es un lugar muy especial. Casi puedes sentir cómo intenta comunicarse contigo. Además, la ubicación de la iglesia, justo al lado del agua, es mágica.”

Hay muchos lugares históricos e infinidad de cosas que ver en la ruta. No te olvides de llevar botas de montaña y ropa adecuada para el clima, ¡así podrás bajarte del coche y explorar!
A menos de 10 minutos en coche de la iglesia se encuentra el Patrimonio Cultural de Mortensnes, un rincón característico con una extensa historia que alberga vestigios de asentamientos de la Edad de Piedra, sitios de sacrificio sami y tumbas.
Puedes visitar esta zona por tu cuenta o reservar un tour guiado (con antelación) en el museo Várjjat Varanger Sámi.
No dejes de visitar el edificio del museo, que contiene exposiciones fascinantes sobre la fe y la mitología sami.
Cultura sami en Varanger
El poderoso fiordo repleto de peces y las mesetas y bosques llenos de presas, bayas y peces de agua dulce atrajeron a los primeros pobladores humanos a Varanger hace 10 000 años. Desde entonces, pueblos de diferentes culturas han vivido en la zona de forma ininterrumpida.
Los primeros restos conocidos de la cultura sami en Varanger son las tumbas del Patrimonio Cultural de Mortensnes, que datan de hace unos 3000 años.
La cultura sami sigue estando presente en Varanger, y Nesseby es un municipio sami.
Como verás, las señales de tráfico en Varanger están escritas tanto en noruego como en sami septentrional, que es la lengua sami más extendida, y no es raro encontrarse renos junto a la carretera.

Finlandeses noruegos
Varanger es muy diverso, por lo que observarás la presencia de la cultura noruego-finlandesa.
En el siglo XIX hubo una inmigración masiva desde el norte de Finlandia y Suecia. En Noruega, a estos inmigrantes se les llamaba kvens, o finlandeses noruegos, como muchos prefieren que se les llame en la actualidad. La posibilidad de combinar la agricultura con la pesca en los fiordos y en los ríos fue parte de los motivos de la emigración.
Los colonos finlandeses dejaron su huella especialmente en las regiones de Vestre Jakobselv, Vadsø y Skallelv. Incluso hoy en día, Vadsø sigue conociéndose como «la ciudad Kven». En la década de 1860, Vadsø tenía una mayoría de habla finlandesa y muchos siguen hablando finlandés y kven.
«Hay un monumento en honor a la inmigración finlandesa y kven en el centro de la ciudad de Vadsø», afirma Ottar, nuestro guía local.
Vadsø
Vadsø es una de las principales ciudades que atravesarás en esta ruta panorámica y es una buena base desde la que explorar Varanger. En ella encontrarás una empresa de alquiler de coches, un hotel y otras opciones de alojamiento, como The Icehouse.
La ciudad se ubica junto al fiordo, en el lado sur de la península, en la isla de Vadsøya, y está unida al continente por un puente.
En Vadsø también se celebra anualmente un festival de música llamado Varangerfestivalen, además de otros numerosos actos culturales. Obtén más información en la oficina de turismo de Varanger, Vadsø.
Desde Vadsø, la ruta continúa hacia el noreste por la costa del fiordo. Fíjate en todos los pueblecitos encantadores con casas de colores junto a la costa, que fueron importantes pueblos pesqueros hasta la década de 1960.
Uno de ellos es la península de Ekkerøy, un lugar con tan solo 20 habitantes, pero…

Varanger es un paraíso para avistar aves y cuenta con algunos de los lugares más accesibles del Ártico para hacerlo.
Puedes aparcar no muy lejos del acantilado de aves de Ekkerøy y, tras un breve paseo, descubrirás su gran colonia de gaviotas tridáctilas.
Disfruta de la increíble reserva ornitológica y, como siempre, respeta las normas de acceso a la naturaleza.
Más pueblos costeros de ensueño
La carretera continúa hacia el este desde Ekkerøy con varias pequeñas poblaciones por el camino, cada una con su propio encanto e historia.
Skallelv es uno de los pocos pueblos del condado de Finnmark que no fue destruido durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Como resultado, se pueden ver edificios de madera que datan de 1860 e incluso más antiguos, entre ellos, Varangerhus.
«Varangerhus es un tipo de casa tradicional de la zona de Varanger. Se construían para servir tanto de granero como de casa, y la razón de edificar granjas de esta forma era sencilla: evitar tener que salir al granero cuando fuera hacía un frío que pelaba. Se pueden ver por todo Varanger», explica Ottar.
Aquí también se encuentra el río Skallelv, un lugar popular para pescar y uno de los favoritos entre los habitantes por su larga playa de arena.
«Los locales llaman a esta zona "Skallorca", un juego de palabras con Mallorca, debido a su increíble playa. Esta zona es un paraíso en verano, aunque el agua no sea la más cálida», comenta nuestro guía local Ottar.
Komagvær es una de las puertas de entrada principales al Parque Nacional de Varanger. Aquí podrás hacer senderismo en una naturaleza impresionante y, por supuesto, disfrutar de la abundante avifauna.
Kiberg está situada al este de la península de Varanger, junto al mar de Barents, y es el hogar del Cabo Este, el punto más oriental de Noruega. En el museo de los partisanos en Kiberg podrás conocer mejor la terrible historia de los jóvenes que abandonaron la Finnmark oriental para recibir entrenamiento y luchar por su país.
El poderoso cangrejo real recorre el mar del norte de Noruega, ¡así que otra visita que no puedes perderte en la zona de Varanger es el safari del cangrejo real! La mayoría de los tours incluyen una parte de cocina y degustación. Puedes participar en una visita guiada en el puerto de Kiberg.
La ruta desde Kiberg hacia Vardø cuenta con una joya arquitectónica que tampoco puedes dejar de visitar: el mirador de Domen.
El estudio de arquitectura Biotope, con sede en Vadsø, ha diseñado doce llamativos escondites para aves en Varanger.
No solo son increíbles de ver, sino que también ofrecen el refugio perfecto para observar aves o simplemente disfrutar de la naturaleza en tranquilidad.

La ciudad más antigua del norte de Noruega
Un fuerte histórico, arte callejero de vanguardia, increíbles lugares desde los que observar aves y el escenario de algunos de los juicios por brujería más notorios del norte de Europa. Acabas de llegar a Vardø, la única ciudad noruega de la zona climática ártica.
Como puedes imaginar, lo ideal es quedarse un tiempo en Vardø para poder disfrutar de todo lo que la ciudad y sus alrededores ofrecen.
Observatorio de aves de Hornøya
Si te gusta observar aves, te dedicas a fotografiar fauna o simplemente eres una persona a la que le encantan las experiencias con animales, debes viajar a la isla de Hornøya, a las afueras de Vardø.
Hornøya es la reserva natural protegida más al este de Noruega y alberga la impresionante cifra de 80 000 aves marinas, ¡entre ellas los simpáticos frailecillos atlánticos!
Se puede llegar en barco desde el puerto de Vardø, desde el que hay salidas todos los días entre el 1 de abril y el 31 de agosto.
Arte callejero en Vardø
Las calles de Vardø se han convertido en una galería de algunas de las mejores obras de arte urbanos del mundo, en gran parte gracias al festival Komafest.
El festival surgió de la colaboración entre los renovadores urbanos locales de Vardø Restored y el artista noruego Pøbel. En 2012, Komafest invitó a once de los mejores artistas urbanos del mundo a dejar su huella en la ciudad.
Explora la ciudad a pie y contempla las obras de E.B. Itso, Ken Sortais, Pøbel, Steve Powers, HuskMitNavn, Atle Østrem, Roa, Remed y Vhils, entre otros.
La fortaleza de Vardøhus
Si te interesan la historia y los lugares históricos, es imprescindible visitar la fortaleza más al norte del mundo, Vardøhus. Se construyó entre 1734 y 1738 y grandes partes de la estructura permanecen intactas desde 1738.
En la actualidad, la Armada Real de Noruega es responsable de proteger la fortaleza, que cuenta con un comandante y soldados en el lugar. La función de la fortaleza es principalmente simbólica.
Memorial Steilneset
Algunos capítulos de la historia son más sombríos que otros. La caza de brujas en Europa es un ejemplo de ello, y también ocurrió en Finnmark.
Entre 1600 y 1692, 91 personas fueron condenadas a muerte en Finnmark por brujería. La mayoría vivía en Vardø, Vadsø o lugares cercanos, y tanto los noruegos como los samis sufrieron esta persecución.
En Vardø, se construyó junto al mar el memorial Steilneset para recordar a los ejecutados.
“El arquitecto Peter Zumthor diseñó el memorial y la caja de cristal alberga una obra de la artista Louise Bourgeois.”

Mientras caminas por la sala conmemorativa, podrás conocer mejor la historia sobre las 91 personas que sufrieron la caza de brujas en Finnmark a través de textos escritos por la historiadora Liv Helene Willumsen.
En el exterior, al final de la sala conmemorativa, se encuentra la obra artística de Bourgeois Los condenados, los poseídos y los amados.
Vardø ofrece una cantidad de arte único art, como esta gigante escultura de madera, Drakkar-Leviathan, de Taibola Assemble.

¡Mira qué paisaje!
Esta última etapa de Vardø a Hamningberg dura aproximadamente una hora en coche y te llevará por el majestuoso Persfjorden antes de encontrarte con el paisaje lunar cerca de Hamningberg.
¡No sería raro que vieras águilas y renos por el camino!
Hamningberg
A medida que la carretera se estrecha, llegarás al último punto (¡o al principio!) de la ruta panorámica de Varanger. ¡Y menuda forma de terminar!
«Hamningberg es una auténtica joya con sus casas pequeñas y su increíble ubicación. Algunos la llaman "el confín de Europa"», comenta Ottar.
El pueblo pesquero abandonado de Hamningberg goza de un enclave espectacular en la costa norte de la península de Varanger. Al pasear por lo que una vez fue un próspero pueblo pesquero, te encontrarás con casas de colores e impresionantes vistas del mar de Barents. De repente, su apodo, «el confín de Europa», cobra mucho sentido.
«Hamningberg ya no es un pueblo pesquero activo, pero algunas de las casas siguen usándose como cabañas y es un lugar popular que rebosa vida en verano», expone Ottar.
Aquí también encontrarás un área de descanso especial, diseñada por el estudio de arquitectura KAP/Asplan Viak AS. Los edificios de los aseos se han diseñado siguiendo el estilo pomor de las casas de troncos, utilizada en muchas de las antiguas viviendas de Hamningberg.
Aquí también descubrirás un extraordinario observatorio de aves diseñado por Biotope. La zona es una de las favoritas de los observadores de aves, sobre todo durante la migración en mayo. Si tienes suerte, podrás ver marsopas, orcas y rorcuales desde Hamningberg.
«Si quieres pasar la noche en Hamningberg, también es posible reservar un alojamiento. Incluso puedes alojarte en una casa tradicional de Varanger», aclara Ottar.
Debido al mal tiempo, la carretera que lleva a Hamningberg está cerrada en invierno. Normalmente se abre a mediados de mayo y se cierra cuando empieza a nevar en otoño.
