Avistamiento de ballenas en Noruega
Estos majestuosos seres habitan en las costas noruegas, y salen a presumir ante la mirada atónita tanto de los turistas como de los lugareños. En Noruega, los cachalotes, que pueden llegar a medir hasta 20 metros, se suelen ver por la costa de Vesterålen durante todo el año.
Zarpando desde el muelle de Andenes, podrás disfrutar de esta experiencia mientras respiras del más puro aire del océano a bordo de un barco de avistamiento. No se sabe lo que pasará durante la excursión, pues al igual que con cualquier otro safari, son los animales quienes deciden cuándo aparecer. No obstante, aquí es donde puedes tener más suerte; Vesterålen es el lugar donde más avistamientos se producen de toda Noruega.
En torno a mediados de invierno, la migración del arenque atrae a ballenas jorobadas, orcas y rorcuales a las costas del norte de Noruega. Para las ballenas, estos grandes bancos de peces suponen un verdadero festín. En los últimos años, este fenómeno se ha dado sobre todo en la región de Lyngenfjord, Tromsø y Alta. Últimamente, se han avistado ballenas en Kvænangen y hay una gran probabilidad de ver orcas, rorcuales y ballenas jorobadas. Varios operadores turísticos ofrecen excursiones en esta zona, entre ellos Brim Explorer, cuyas silenciosas embarcaciones híbridas-eléctricas perturban lo menos posible a las ballenas y al medioambiente.
Sin embargo, la naturaleza manda: el año que viene, los arenques podrían migrar a otra zona y las ballenas hambrientas los seguirían.
En las islas Svalbard quizás tengas la suerte de ver a la ballena más grande del mundo: la ballena azul.

¿Cuál es el mejor lugar del mundo para ver ballenas?
Andenes, en Vesterålen, cuenta con una geografía que te permite acercarte a ellas durante cualquier época del año. Los cachalotes habitan en una zona rica en nutrientes ubicada al noroeste de Andenes llamada Bleikdjupet (cañón de Bleik). Según Sara, no existe ningún otro lugar en los países nórdicos donde puedas llegar a unas aguas tan profundas, que es donde hay más probabilidades de ver a una ballena.
La temporada de avistamiento de ballenas de invierno suele ir desde mediados de enero hasta abril, y la temporada de verano va desde principios de mayo hasta principios de noviembre.
Si vas a hacer un safari con Whalesafari Andenes, puedes hacer un tour de su museo de las ballenas, ubicado en su centro de ballenas. También hay safaris que salen de Stø, en Langøya, Vesterålen. Desde allí tendrás que hacer una travesía un poco más larga para poder ver a las ballenas, pero como aliciente puede que veas a unas focas descasando junto a la orilla, pues hay una colonia junto al pueblo.
Un safari de ballenas no es solo transporte hasta el lugar donde se encuentran las ballenas, sino un viaje emocionante con unas vistas increíbles de los fiordos y el paisaje del Ártico. Muchas agencias ofrecen una garantía de avistamiento del 100%, por lo que si no consigues ver ninguna ballena, te ofrecerán realizar otro recorrido.

Pautas de seguridad
En Noruega nos tomamos muy en serio nuestra responsabilidad medioambiental y queremos asegurarnos de que todo el mundo cumpla una serie de normas comunes que velen por la protección de la fauna y al ecosistema durante este tipo de actividades.
Ten en cuenta que cuando realizas un safari de este tipo, eres un invitado en la casa de las ballenas. Cualquier persona que se adentre en una zona donde habiten las ballenas debe cumplir la normativa nacional de avistamiento de ballenas. Estas normas se aplican a cualquier tipo de embarcaciones, y tanto al público general como a las agencias turísticas y o de cualquier otro tipo.
Mantén una distancia prudencial para evitar molestar o estresar a las ballenas. Bajo ningún concepto debes intentar atraer a las ballenas o tocarlas. Darles de comer, hacer ruidos o utilizar cualquier tipo de aparatos luminosos está terminantemente prohibido.
Escoge una agencia de viajes que opere de forma responsable, velando por la preservación del ecosistema y sin saltarse las normas. En lo que respecta a los drones, su uso en estos espacios está restringido por una serie de normas.
Si las cumples, podrás pasar un día inolvidable y seguro en el mar.
El reclamo principal: los cachalotes
La tripulación ha oído unos sonidos de ballena en la lejanía…
Si ves al capitán sentado con unos auriculares puestos durante el trayecto, es porque está usando un hidrófono para buscar cachalotes, un dispositivo que permite detectar y grabar sonidos del océano procedentes de todas direcciones. Se dice que son los animales con el mayor timbre de voz del mundo, y los sonidos que producen pueden detectarse incluso a tres o cuatro millas náuticas de distancia.
Son los campeones del buceo, pudiendo llegar incluso a los 2000 metros de profundidad. Estas ballenas pueden permanecer bajo la superficie durante una hora y media. Una vez salen, se mantienen fuera durante una media de 8 minutos. También es posible reconocer a los cachalotes por el aire que expulsan de su orificio, que tiene una inclinación de 45 grados.
Lo último que se ve es la cola, que apunta hacia arriba en el aire (en ese momento es cuando tienes que hacer una foto) antes de volver a sumergirse en las profundidades del océano.
No te preocupes cuando esto suceda, pues la fauna del Ártico es increíble y muy variada.
7 consejos para ir a ver a las ballenas
• Abrígate bien: ponte bastantes capas y ponte algo impermeable.
• Ten la cámara lista y utiliza una lente con zoom para sacar las mejores fotos.
• Deja la cámara de vez en cuando y disfruta con tus propios ojos de las increíbles vistas que ofrece el norte de Noruega.
• Habla con la tripulación. Seguro que estarán encantados de contarte todo lo que saben sobre las distintas especies de ballenas y a qué hay que estar atento durante la excursión.
• Ten paciencia. El capitán y la tripulación te ayudarán a localizar a las ballenas manteniéndote informado de sus hallazgos.
• Si eres propenso a marearte a bordo, tómate algo contra las náuseas 1 o 2 horas antes de zarpar.
• Échate algo de picar. Lo mejor son los aperitivos salados como las patatas fritas de bolsa o las galletitas saladas, pues ayudan a combatir las náuseas.
La fauna de Vesterålen
Durante tu safari de ballenas, es probable que te encuentres a algunas otras especies fascinantes.
Las aves de la costa de Andøya son algo espectacular. ¿Alguna vez has visto a estas pequeñas aves? La isla de Bleiksøya es un gran santuario de pájaros. En verano, alberga la mayor colonia de frailecillos de Noruega. También podrás encontrar alcas tordas, araos, araos negros y cormoranes.
