Este recorrido de 108 kilómetros pasa por Lom, un histórico pueblo de montaña, atraviesa el puerto de montaña más alto del norte de Europa y desciende hasta las aguas esmeralda del Lusterfjord para terminar en la aldea de Gaupne, en Luster, en el extremo más interior del famoso fiordo de Sogn.

Calcula unas dos horas y quince minutos de conducción para hacer la ruta completa, aunque merece la pena reservar varios días para poder disfrutar bien de los glaciares, los fiordos y la cultura alpina.

Si sales desde Oslo, tardarás unas cinco horas en llegar a Lom. También puedes empezar desde Luster si vienes de Bergen, un trayecto de aproximadamente cuatro horas y media.

Ten en cuenta que el puerto de montaña entre Rustasætre y Turtagrø permanece cerrado durante el invierno y suele volver a abrir entre mediados de abril y principios de mayo. A pesar de la reapertura, la carretera puede cerrarse por la noche o cuando las condiciones meteorológicas son adversas. Además, es posible que haya nieve y hielo incluso en verano.

Juvasshytta in Jotunheimen

Comienza siguiendo la carretera en dirección suroeste durante 25 minutos. Entonces llegarás al hotel Elveseter, una antigua granja familiar convertida en un pintoresco alojamiento de montaña. ¡Volvamos a la ruta panorámica!

Después de dejar atrás Elveseter, encontrarás un poco más adelante el área de descanso de Liasanden, un lugar ideal para escuchar el susurro del viento entre los pinos.

Aunque las cumbres imponentes como Store Skagastølstind atraen a escaladores veteranos de todo el mundo, podrás admirar estos paisajes espectaculares con total seguridad desde el mirador Vegaskjelet, situado un poco más adelante en la ruta.

Sigue por la carretera de montaña otros 25 minutos y, finalmente, llegarás a la cima en Sognefjellshytta. Esta cabaña moderna destaca por su diseño llamativo de madera y cristal, que permite ver a los esquiadores de fondo entrenar sobre la nieve del glaciar durante los meses de verano.

Si buscas sacar buenas fotos, el mirador Mefjellet se encuentra a solo tres minutos más adelante. Allí encontrarás la emblemática escultura de piedra, que actúa como un enorme marco natural para el paisaje.

Tras otra breve parada en Oscarshaug para visitar sus singulares aseos, obra de Snøhetta, la misma empresa que diseñó la Ópera de Oslo, sigue unos minutos más por la carretera hasta Nedre Oscarshaug, uno de los mejores miradores de Jotunheimen.

Y ahora comienza el descenso hacia el hotel Turtagrø. Esta zona es la cuna histórica del alpinismo en Noruega y la puerta de entrada principal a la escarpada cordillera de Hurrungane. Un lugar excelente para pasar la noche o disfrutar de una contundente comida de montaña.

Tras otros 20 minutos al volante llegarás a Skjolden, situado en el extremo más interior del fiordo de Sogn. Aquí podrás disfrutar de actividades únicas, como rutas de senderismo con alpacas, recorridos en lancha semirrígida de alta velocidad y tranquilas caminatas por el frondoso valle de Mørkridsdalen.

Bordea el Lustrafjord durante unos 15 minutos más y recarga fuerzas con los deliciosos productos de la panadería Lustrabui, o disfruta de una estancia de lujo en uno de los encantadores alojamientos de la zona, como el peculiar y precioso hotel boutique Bestebakken.

20 minutos después llegarás a Gaupne, el final de la ruta panorámica de Sognefjellet. Desde aquí puedes desviarte por el valle de Jostedalen para ver el glaciar Nigardsbreen o probar el rafting y la tirolina para un chute de adrenalina con Icetroll (¡incluso combinados!). Y recuerda que el viaje no tiene por qué terminar aquí…

    The starting point is the car park in Engjadalen. The first stretch follows a track on the west side of the river along the valley. After a short walk you come to a marked path which leads to the Tourist Association (DNT) cabin at Navarsete. The path continues along the west side of the river until it crosses the river just before Heggdalen, an nice summer farm up the green and fertile Engjadalen valley. From Heggdalen the climb is fairly steep up to Heggdalsvatnet lake where the path occasionally goes right to the edge of the river cutting. It is as well to warn you to avoid this stretch, especially when it's raining or there is slippery ice. You can leave the path and find a way a few metres further from the cliff

Cierres en invierno y aperturas en primavera

El tramo de alta montaña entre Rustasætre/Vegaskjelet y Turtagrø cierra durante el invierno en noviembre y suele volver a abrir entre mediados de abril y principios de mayo. Las condiciones meteorológicas adversas pueden provocar cierres repentinos o durante la noche, por lo que es recomendable consultar siempre la página web de Statens Vegvesen para obtener información actualizada sobre el tráfico antes de salir.

Consejos para ciclistas

Sognefjellet, que forma parte de la ruta ciclista nacional n.º 6, es un recorrido impresionante, aunque puede resultar duro. Si se sale de Skjolden/Fortun, al oeste, hay que superar un desnivel de 850 metros en tan solo 10 kilómetros, con pendientes pronunciadas que alcanzan el 16 % hasta Turtagrø. Si se sale de Lom, el ascenso es más suave, pero la recompensa es un descenso muy empinado y técnico hasta Fortun.

Servicios para autocaravanas

Los aseos de diseño arquitectónico situados a lo largo de la ruta no están preparados para gestionar los residuos de autocaravanas y caravanas. Vaciar los inodoros químicos en estas áreas de descanso está prohibido. En su lugar, los viajeros en cámper deben utilizar las estaciones de vaciado habilitadas en Lom, Vågåmo o Gaupne.
