La cascada de las Siete Hermanas, que desemboca sobre el fiordo de Geiranger, Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la Unesco, es una de las más emblemáticas y que mayor atracción recibe de las cámaras en toda Noruega.

En algunas partes es posible ascender andando hasta la cima para regocijarte con unas vistas sublimes.

Langfoss es otro espectáculo para los ojos, con sus aguas que descienden desde la montaña a 600 metros de altitud hasta fundirse en el lecho del fiordo de Åkrafjord, en la Noruega de los fiordos.

La mejor época para disfrutar de las cascadas de Noruega es durante los meses de mayo y junio, que es cuando las corrientes de agua alcanzan su máximo caudal.

En alguna ocasión te puedes llevar un lavado de coche (o de cara) gratuito a tu paso por los alrededores de una cascada, como ocurre aquí, en Låtefoss.

En invierno, algunas cascadas se congelan y se convierten en una gigante pared, formando un verdadero paraíso para los aficionados a la escalada en hielo. Sin embargo, esta actividad solo está recomendada para escaladores experimentados, y siempre bajo la supervisión de un guía.

Para quienes quieran probar esta actividad por primera vez, podrán contratar una sesión guiada en SNØ, el complejo de esquí de interior de Oslo.

Las cascadas de Noruega

Muchas cascadas originan una caída espectacular desde lo alto de una abrupta montaña hacia el fiordo, mientras que otras van a parar al cauce de los ríos mezclándose con sus aguas. Todas ellas forman una parte integral del variado paisaje noruego.

Las cascadas más altas de Noruega brotan desde una altura de 800 metros y, según la base de datos World Waterfall Database, Vinnufallet es la más elevada si se tiene en cuenta la longitud total del salto de agua. Vinnufallet se encuentra en Sunndalen, en el noroeste de Noruega, una zona con varias cascadas de gran belleza, como las de Åmotan y Mardalsfossen.

Otras de las cascadas más famosas son Vøringsfossen, en el valle de Måbødalen, y la de las Siete Hermanas (De syv søstre), en Geiranger, llamada así porque recuerda a la melena de siete mujeres. La poderosa cascada Kjosfossen es uno de los muchos atractivos que se pueden observar a lo largo del recorrido del tren de Flåm, donde, en temporada punta turística en pleno verano, un grupo de actrices caracterizadas de huldras, (criaturas del folclore escandinavo que habitaban en los bosques) bailan y cantan delante de la cascada.

Para los noruegos, las cascadas representan mucho más que la oportunidad de tomar buenas fotos. La mayoría de las cascadas del país son usadas con fines energéticos y abastecen de electricidad a gran parte de la industria y hogares de sus alrededores, de forma respetuosa con el medioambiente.
