¿Qué son los fiordos y cómo se formaron?
Un fiordo es un entrante del mar, normalmente largo y estrecho, rodeado de altos acantilados o montañas escarpadas. Suelen tener valles en forma de U y pueden ser muy profundos, pero a menudo lo son menos en la desembocadura, donde el fiordo se encuentra con el mar. Además, algunos tienen varios brazos laterales o ramificaciones. De hecho, ¿sabías que algunos de los fiordos más famosos de Noruega son ramificaciones?
Se formaron a raíz de una gran glaciación, en la que el hielo llegó a extenderse por debajo del nivel del mar. Durante un periodo de 2500 millones de años, los glaciares fueron esculpiendo los valles en forma de U a lo largo de sucesivos ciclos glaciares. En otras palabras, fueron los glaciares los que dieron forma a los fiordos.
Dato curioso: la palabra «fiordo» proviene del término nórdico antiguo fjorðr, que significa ir, pasar o cruzar.
¿Qué profundidad tienen los fiordos?
Los fiordos pueden ser bastante profundos, pero esto varía. El más profundo de Noruega es el fiordo de Sogn, en el Oeste de Noruega, que tiene 1303 metros de profundidad.
¿Qué longitud tienen los fiordos?
La longitud también varía. El fiordo de Sogn, además de ser el más profundo del país, mide 205 kilómetros de largo: va desde Solund, en el oeste, hasta Skjolden, a los pies de los parques nacionales de Jotunheimen, Jostedalsbreen y Breheimen.
El fiordo de Hardanger, ubicado en la localidad con el mismo nombre, es el segundo fiordo más largo (180 kilómetros).

Qué fiordos visitar
La costa noruega es una de las zonas del mundo con más fiordos (¡más de 1000!).
En el Norte de Noruega es donde hay más densidad de fiordos; allí se encuentran los mundialmente conocidos Trollfjord y Lyngenfjord. De hecho, los fiordos de Geiranger y Nærøy, en la Noruega de los fiordos, están declarados Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. ¿Cuál es la mejor época para visitarlos?

¿Se puede ir a los fiordos en tren, autobús o barco?
Es posible llegar a muchos fiordos noruegos en transporte público de forma segura y cómoda. Los autobuses y los ferris locales (o una combinación de ambos) suelen ser muy buenas opciones.
